The Privileged Life: Sleep

0555FC0F-9E96-4657-AA25-92A5C48BA461“In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction.” Job 33:15-16

It’s now the second day out from the spring arrival called Daylight Savings Time. That lost hour wreaks havoc with my snooze patterns…and consequently my memory and ability to think clearly. Jetting between time zones makes it even worse.

I recommend an eye-opening book, “Why We Sleep,” written by sleep expert/enthusiast Matthew Walker…it will wake you up to the incredible importance of sleep to our mental and physical health! (Sorry, couldn’t resist the puns….) But it really is an excellent account, backed up by Walker’s clinical research.

He demonstrates how the human brain is unbelievably complex. It doesn’t stop working when we sleep but actually functions in ways similar to the motherboard and hard drive of computers…downloading the day’s experiences from short-term recall to long-term memory. Without sleep, our brains cannot retain information.

The writers in the Old Testament already had that one figured out…and also that for those who keep sound wisdom and discretion, sleep will be “sweet.” (Proverbs 3:21-24)

Tonight as you rest your head on your pillow (if you are blessed to have one and a bed), thank God for a place of rest and peaceful slumber. Indulge and rejoice in seven to eight hours of this God-given health benefit!

Thank you, Father, for Your gift of sweet sleep. Help us to get plenty of this life-giving practice so that we might serve You well in our waking hours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
