You Are Set Apart to …

I once spent $15 at a garage sale for a guitar. I didn’t care if it worked; I didn’t care how it sounded. I had another idea in mind. I made a lamp.

(I wanted the light to come on when you strummed the strings, but I’m not that smart. So I settled on making the lights dim with the volume control.)

Play it.

Guitars were not designed to light a room or hold a collection of your grandmother’s Precious Moments figurines. A guitar is set apart from lights, bookcases, and clocks for one reason: it is set apart to be played.

You were created and set apart for one purpose: to glorify God.

As followers of Christ, we’ve been set apart. That’s what the word holy means: to be set apart. It’s also the idea behind the word sanctified. We are sanctified—set apart—in Christ. Sanctification, then, is growing into that holiness, becoming more and more like Christ.

“Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Pet. 1:16).

Want to know the best way to enjoy life? Recognize that you have been set apart in Christ and live the life He has set you apart to live. We all want joy and happiness in our lives, and we chase it in a hundred different directions. But when we live our lives fully for God’s glory, we’re overwhelmed with joy.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10).

So be the “set apart” instrument in God’s hands. Let Him “play” you. Then enjoy the beautiful music He brings to your life as you grow in Him.
