How To Overcome Addiction? - Raising Zion

How to overcome addiction?
Any form of addiction.

Some addictions are outwardly evident, while others may not be openly evident. Any type of addiction is a spirit issue. The human spirit is bound by an evil spirit that pushes us away from Christ or pulls us towards the devil. Lusts that draw as away from the loving Father is the worst thing that happens to man.

A strange fire that burns in us, consuming us little by little. The only fire that can consume this strange fire is the fire of the Holy Spirit. God is a consuming fire.

Why aren’t believers unable to overcome addiction?

  1. Lack of daily prayer life
  2. Lack of daily bible meditation
  3. Unbelief
  4. Finding joy or enjoyment in worldly things rather than God’s will

A prayer life is not only about personal dedication in prayer. It needs to involve fellowship (Hebrews 10:25), assembling of fellow saints on a regular basis. Most importantly it reveals our love for God’s presence and for each other as we prepare for the day. When believers come together, it’s a reminder of God’s love for us and the new family He has given us. Brothers and sisters in love with each other, founded on God’s love. Praying opens us up in ways only possible in the presence of God. We realise the depravity of sin in our lives and are able to receive forgiveness and strength to overcome the evils of each day.

Bible meditation is a day and night exercise. It cleans our minds and hearts. Our spirit is purified by the truth that heals. We grow in holiness. The word of God sanctifies us as we meditate on His word. Eternal words, word that cuts through the intents of the heart and moulds our views. We shed our opinions to submit to God’s perfect word.

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (John 17:17)

When unbelief enters our hearts we depart from God (Hebrews 3:12). Bitterness against people causes us to return to our former behaviours. The old man cannot believe in the power of God’s word. Only humility and repentance will restore fully.

What gives you most joy? If it isn’t Jesus, or fellowship, then we are far away from the truth. The world offers us nothing of heaven (1 John 2:15-17).

May God help us to stay wholeheartedly in love with Him till the end. Maranatha, praise God and amen.
