3 powerful lessons from people who pulled water out of a well - Raising Zion

pulled water out of a well

Ever pulled water out of a well? It’s one heckuva backbreaking experience. Pulling water out of a well was a fun activity for me as a child which I enjoyed every time I was home in the village.

For some it’s a way of life, for some others it’s their livelihood. It’s a hard physical task that demands a lot from the doer.

I want to share three references in the Bible, where people went to draw water, and what we can learn from them as young believers.

What can we learn from three people who pulled water out of a well

1. Rebecca watered Eleazars camels (Genesis 24:17-20). Rebecca not only gave Abrahams servant water to drink, she wilfully poured water for the camels as well. (A camel drinks over 200 litres in three minutes) She kept others needs above hers. A true servant of God.

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; (Romans 12:10)

2. Moses watered Zipporahs flock after driving away the bully shepherds (Exodus 2:15-19). We need to help those who are weak in faith. No matter what we are going through, when we can help others, we must do it. Moses had just killed an Egyptian and making a run for it. The last thing on his mind was get into another fight. Still, he did what he thought was good, help the women by scaring the wicked shepherds.

We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (Romans 15:1)

3. Like the woman of Samaria in John 4:7-15 desire a deeper spiritual experience. She came to draw water, but ended up drawing living waters from the heart of Jesus. A woman of understanding, she learnt quickly from her conversation who she was speaking to.

Counsel in the heart of man is like water in a deep well, but a man of understanding draws it out. (Proverbs 20:5)

Hope these insights encouraged you in the Lord.
