Who Am I in Christ? And 6 Amazing Qualities of Jesus

Who am I in Christ? Are you questioning your identity especially as it relates to your spiritual life?

I didn’t contemplate my identity or who I was in Christ until it seemed everything in my life was falling apart. I thought I knew who I was in Christ and understood my relationship with God until things began to unravel.

My unraveling and identity struggle led to a journey answering this one important question, who am I in Christ, which brought my entire life into focus.

 ^“It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.”

Ephesians 1:11-12 MSG

Do you wonder, who you are and why you are here? I often ask myself and God these questions. Most of us probably examine the meaning of life and how we fit into the world– especially when things are hard or seem out of control.

Deep conversations with God are a great starting point to grow in your faith. It is life-giving to have sincere reflections with ourselves and with God about our identity and purpose.

• Understanding your identity in Christ has a huge impact on your current life and eternity.

Knowing who I am in Christ reminds me of when I was a child and had a burning question about someone or something. After asking my parents and getting the satisfaction of an answer, the world felt in order at least for a moment.

• Understanding who am I in Christ restores order to our lives and brings clarity much longer than a moment; it is forever.

We can believe in Christ, read the Bible, attend church, serve in our church and community, and do other faith-affirming things, but if we do not understand the answer to, who am I in Christ, we are missing a huge component of our spirituality.

• Knowing who you are in Christ is a revelation that brings freedom.

Understanding our identity in Christ is essential to wholeness because once we embrace who God says we are, transformation follows. Our view of ourselves and everything else is changed.

• Knowing who we are in Christ fills a deep personal longing and answers one of our greatest questions.

Discovering who am I in Christ can start with a simple prayer,

“Dear Lord, reveal who am I in Christ. Help me encounter scripture, people and your Holy Spirit to reveal who I am in Christ. Help me accept how you see me so I can experience true spiritual freedom.”

Knowing Who I am in Christ

I grew up attending church every Sunday but did not realize that knowing who I am in Christ was what I was looking for. I often felt incomplete and hollow. There seemed to be something missing in the deepest part of me that led to discouragement and frustration.

I thought, who am I in Christ would be revealed by working hard to do the right things and following all of the rules.

I thought who am I in Christ would be revealed by connecting with the right people who seemed to have climbed the highest spiritual mountains and had achieved spiritual greatness.

I thought who am I in Christ would be revealed by memorizing scripture and saying the right things.

I thought who am I in Christ would be revealed by helping out in church and impressing others with my willingness and ability.

I was wrong.

I was chasing many things, but knowing who am I in Christ was not what I was truly pursuing. Finding wholeness and meaning became elusive and drove me to spiritual fatigue.

Being described as religious, spiritual, or over the top into Jesus does not necessarily describe someone who has answered the question, who am I in Christ? They are simply titles that mean nothing until they are linked to a deep faith, love, and dependence on God.

^“For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but the word they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united with those who listened with faith.” Hebrews 4:2 NASB

When we understand, who am I in Christ, it filters through every aspect of our existence. It changes how we see ourselves, our purpose, and how we live in relationships. Our faith begins to define everything about us.

When we know who we are in Christ, we don’t just follow rules, check the boxes, and earn points. We aspire to live as Christ taught because we love Jesus, He asks us to, and it is a better life.

Being saved and loved by Jesus for eternity is the most important news we can grasp and share with others as much as possible. Once we know who we are in Christ, we want to help others see the light too!

“God does his deepest work in your life when he deals with your identity—the person you truly are as opposed to the way you see yourself. The way you think about yourself dictates how you act. So, God makes his deepest changes in your life by changing the way you see yourself—by showing you how he sees you. And when you see yourself the way God sees you, it’s going to change your life.”

Who is the Person of Christ? 6 Amazing Qualities

For a long period of my life, I did not deeply consider who is the person of Christ. I loved Jesus and wanted to please and follow Him but did not dig into His character and His person to build a life-changing relationship.

A turning point in my life occurred when someone I looked up to in church experienced a moral failure that left me feeling confused and disappointed. My disillusionment led to the redirection of my faith life; the examination of my authenticity and a desire to seek out who I was in Christ instead of comparing myself to what others said or did.

Since that pivotal moment, my relationship with Jesus has grown. I now know who I am in Christ and sense His presence guiding me. I still make mistakes and see areas that need attention and growth but I don’t struggle with bouts of doubt as often as I once did. I try to stay in my lane and keep my focus on God and His direction for my life.

What we choose to focus on will dictate where we spend our valuable resources of time and love. Our confidence and sense of belonging grow when we invest in the study of the life of Jesus, His Word, and are open to the Holy Spirit.

Who is the Person of Jesus?

Along with the Bible, one of the most helpful books to study about the person of Jesus is The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. In his book, he thoroughly summarizes his walk from atheist to believer based on his research on the person of Christ.

 “I didn’t become a Christian because God promised I would have an even happier life than I had as an atheist.  He never promised any such thing.  Indeed, following him would inevitably bring divine demotions in the eyes of the world.  Rather, I became a Christian because the evidence was so compelling that Jesus really is the one-and-only Son of God who proved his divinity by rising from the dead.  That meant following him was the most rational and logical step I could possibly take.”

After understanding who is the person of Christ, we can embrace a life-changing relationship with Him and experience these six powerful qualities of Jesus.

• Jesus is our Greatest Love

To understand the person of Christ we must begin with His great love for us. If you have not experienced unconditional love from someone it may be hard to accept how much God loves you. But you must believe that you are His beloved!

“Lord, you’re so kind and tenderhearted and so patient with people who fail you! Your love is like a flooding river
overflowing its banks with kindness.” Psalm 103:8 TPT

“I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love.” John 15:9 MSG

• Jesus is our Savior

All can be saved and spend their earthly time and eternity with God. When we repent or change directions to follow Christ our soul transformation begins.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 NIV

• Jesus is our Closest Friend

Jesus is our closest friend and loves us unconditionally. Not only did he die so that we may have life, He walks beside us always.

“And here is how to measure it—the greatest love is shown when a person lays down his life for his friends” John 15:13 TLB

• Jesus is our Forgiver

There is nothing too big that God won’t forgive. His love is unconditional and always awaits our acceptance.

“Therefore, her sins—and they are many—are forgiven, for she loved me much” Luke 7:47 TLB

• Jesus is our Greatest Joy

A life with Jesus is also the greatest source of true joy. Jesus doesn’t eliminate our struggles or pain but when we enjoy a relationship with Christ, He replaces our sorrow with His joy. He replaces our fear with trust.

 “I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature.” John 15:11 MSG

• Jesus is our Truth

When we understand who is the person of Christ, we know the truth. Being rooted in truth helps us detect deception or counterfeits and avoid being misled.

One day many years ago on a road trip with friends, we played a CD about growing in spirituality. As we listened, I began to feel unsettled. I realized that what was being taught was not God’s truth. The speaker spoke with authority but his words were misleading and deceptive.

This was a time in my life when I was pursuing Jesus and discovering who I was in Christ. Jesus did not let me down! The Holy Spirit quickly revealed the truth to me and infiltrated every part of my identity.

“And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many people.” Matthew 24:4-5 NASB

What Does the Bible Say About Who I am in Christ?

What does the Bible say about who I am in Christ? It is the best handbook or instruction manual for discovering your identity in Christ. Here are four ways the Bible answers, who am I in Christ:

• Who am I in Christ?

The Bible says, turn to Jesus for new life and discover your true identity and who you are in Christ:

“Jesus answered, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you unless a person is born again [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified], he cannot [ever] see and experience the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 AMP

• Who am I in Christ?

The Bible says, cling to your faith to fully know who you are in Christ:

^“So then, we must cling in faith to all we know to be true. For we have a magnificent King-Priest, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who rose into the heavenly realm for us, and now sympathizes with us in our frailty. Hebrews 4:14 TPT

• Who am I in Christ?

The Bible says all who belong to Jesus listen and follow His teachings:

“Jesus replied, “Loving me empowers you to obey my word. And my Father will love you so deeply that we will come to you and make you our dwelling place.” John 14:23 TPT

• Who am I in Christ?

The Bible says my love of God and others will be the greatest demonstration of knowing who I am in Christ

“The Scriptures say, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind.’ They also say, ‘Love your neighbors as much as you love yourself.’” Luke 10:27 CEV

Identity in Christ

Our fingerprints are a clear claim on our human identity. Fingerprints are usually formed by the time a fetus is 17 weeks old. It is believed that no two people share the same fingerprints even identical twins. That’s crazy considering the millions of people in the world.

That one fact of our individuality reveals the power of the incredible creator of life, God. But when we examine our identity in Christ it takes our uniqueness to a new level–our spirit and soul.

Our identity was formed by the hands of our potter, God, who designed every aspect of our humanity, including our mind, body, and soul, to be His masterpiece.

Can you accept that about yourself? If not, pray specifically for God to help you embrace this truth about yourself.

Steven Curtis Chapman’s song Fingerprints of God beautifully describes who I am in Christ,
“I can see the fingerprints of God when I look at you. Never has there been, and never again will there be another you. Fashioned by God’s hand and perfectly planned to be just who you are. And what He’s been creating, since the first beat of your heart is a living, breathing, priceless work of art!”

The key to living a life filled with intentionality and perseverance is to know who we are in Christ, know our gifts and where we are being called, and live humbly knowing we are being refined.

Who We Are in Christ
