What Is More Important Than Your Commitment To The Lord?

The average number of verses in each of the psalms is just under 17. Psalm 106, which is the one we are looking at today is longer than the average with 48 verses. It starts with these words. Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Most of the rest of it revealed how unfaithful God’s people were in the past. This brings me to ask, what is more important than your commitment to the Lord.

They mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs. They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall. Then they even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons. Psalm 106:35-37

The writer of this Psalm didn’t pull any punches. In verse 6, he started with a confession of their sin before the Lord.

Like our ancestors, we have sinned. We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly! Psalm 106:6

After his confession then he expanded on a list of Israel’s downfalls.

  • They soon forgot His many acts of kindness to them, verse 7.
  • They tested God’s patience, verse 14
  • His ancestors were jealous and envious of God’s chosen leaders, Moses and Aaron, verse 16
  • They made an image made of gold and bowed before it, verse  19.
  • They refused to obey the Lord, verse 25.
  • Their worship involved the idols of the pagans, verse 36.
  • They defiled themselves by their evil deeds, verse 39.

When worshiping the pagan’s idols they even offered their sons and daughters as sacrifices, thus shedding innocent blood. It’s hard for me to understand how someone could kill a human being as a sacrifice, especially their own children.

God Didn’t Abandon Them.

Again and again, he rescued them but they chose to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed by their sin. Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries. He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love.  Psalm 106:43-45

God has also made a covenant with us. So, how do we measure our level of commitment or dedication to Him? I have used the argument in the past how I have dedicated my whole life to what I believe. But then others have done the same for their beliefs.

Christianity claims many educated people within its ranks. But then again people with the same types of education are claimed by those of other religions. Millions follow my way of thinking, as do millions follow other ways of thinking, too.

So, what makes my belief, my commitment, my way of life; Christianity, right and different from theirs? It has to do with the empty grave of Jesus. The one who died on the cross, was buried, and rose from the grave. All who call on His name can live forever with Him.

Commitment to the Lord

How is Your Commitment to the Lord?

Now when we think in terms of eternity, what is more important than your commitment to the Lord? Hopefully nothing. Look at how the Psalmist ended this chapter.

Save us, O Lord our God! Gather us back from among the nations, so we can thank your holy name and rejoice and praise you. Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the Lord! Psalm 106:47-48

Jesus is coming again to gather His church from all the nations. The dead in Christ will rise first followed by the living. We will meet Him in the air. Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the Lord!
