What Are You Thinking?

Good morning, friends! Day Seven! What are you thinking? Some say we think over 70,000 thoughts a day. Who knows? But this I know: Our thoughts determine the course of our lives.

Bible Reading: Romans 1-2

Verse of the day is: Romans 1:28 “And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting.”

Word of the day is: Reprobate.  It is the Greek word:  ἀδόκιμος (ad-ok’-ee-mos).

This word means: It means to talk idly, meditate.

Thinking to Understand

The book of Romans is one of my favorites and is a doctrinal treatise where Paul lays a foundation for salvation to Jews and gentiles. John Calvin said of the Book of Romans, “When anyone understands this Epistle, he has a passage opened to him to the understanding of the whole Scripture.” It is in the book of Romans that we see our need for salvation and learn of this salvation through a framework in which Paul leads us through the Law, to our failure to keep the Law, and ultimate justification and atonement through Christ for those who will believe.

Think on These Things

In the opening chapters of Romans Paul reveals the coming wrath for those who continue in ignorance to live in the flesh rather than in the Spirit. I know what you are thinking – why on earth did Denise pick the word reprobate? Well, I researched it for a discussion board in one of my PhD courses and was struck by the definition. It means to talk idly; meditate. The definition of “to talk idly” is enlightening when we think of one’s mind. I’ve often said that idle time (i-d-l-e) leads to idol time (i-d-o-l). When one’s mind is not on the word of God, it is on idle matters, leading to a decay of morals and mindset. This word reprobate also has to do with testing. Certainly, everyone is tested in this life and our mind and therefore actions will reveal the fruit of that testing.

How is your thought life, friend? Do you become embittered or offended easily? Do you talk about others? Check yourself before you wreck yourself. Idle thoughts lead us astray.

Application

What we think on matters.

Proverbs 4:23 GNT, “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.”
