30 Scriptures to Strengthen a Generous Heart

What does the bible say about being generous?  I’ve learned a whole lot about the topic over the years, and our last few years of impoverished conditions have surely been some great teachers about the value that a generous heart brings to this world.

It’s amazing how seasons of poverty have a way of shaking us loose from the clutches of greed, if we let them do the work of growing our dependency on God, not manmade systems.  But, to embrace the generous heart, as God reveals in scripture, we surely must look away from the words of men, and instead, towards the Word of God.

30 Scriptures to Strengthen a Generous Heart

When we fortify our minds with the Word of God, we plant seeds that have the opportunity to root deeply and feed us when the wilderness is thrusted upon us.  The Word of God, planted into our souls through regular reflection, reading, and meditation over, is the access point for claiming victory in the most intense seasons of struggle and suffering.

Generosity is no different.  God has built this whole world to operate with a flow of life that is guided in love.  When we recognize that we have a place in the availability of love in this world through not only our internal thought processes, but also the heart with which we engage with and provide for the needs of others, we realize that the fulfillment of the Word that God spoke to Adam in the garden:

Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” ~ Genesis 1: 28

We were welcomed as the caretakers of the earth, and that means that we have the authority to do either a good job, or not…but we live with the affects of either path.

A generous heart is inherently intertwined with creating an optimal earth, because GOD is generous and freeing giving.  But, I’m going to let the Word do the talking in this regard.  So, with no further adieu, here are 30 verses to strengthen a generous heart.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” ~ 2 Corinthians 9: 7A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” ~ Proverbs 11: 25“If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13: 4“The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously.” ~ Psalm 37: 21

“NOW HE WHO SUPPLIES SEED TO THE SOWER AND BREAD FOR FOOD WILL ALSO SUPPLY AND INCREASE YOUR STORE OF SEED AND WILL ENLARGE THE HARVEST OF YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” ~ 2 CORINTHIANS 9: 10

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” ~ Proverbs 3: 9-10“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” ~ Romans 12: 21“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” ~ Proverbs 3: 27“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.” ~ Hebrews 13: 2“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” ~ 2 Corinthians 9: 11

“The righteous gives and does not hold back.” ~ Proverbs 21: 26

“Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’” ~ Matthew 19: 21“Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” ~ Proverbs 31: 9“But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” ~ Matthew 6: 3-4“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” ~ Isaiah 40: 29

“GOOD WILL COME TO THOSE WHO ARE GENEROUS AND LEND FREELY, WHO CONDUCT THEIR AFFAIRS WITH JUSTICE.” ~ PSALM 112: 5

“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” ~ Luke 6: 38“You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” ~ Exodus 22: 21“For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.” ~ 2 Corinthians 8: 12“Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.” ~ Luke 6: 30

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” ~ James 1: 5

“‘Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?’ For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” ~ Romans 11: 35-36“He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.” ~ Psalm 33: 5“The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your beast and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.” ~ Deuteronomy 28: 11

“IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE.” ~ ACTS 20: 25

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?  Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” ~ 1 John 3: 17-18

A GENEROUS HEART PROSPERS IN THE LORD

There is no greater joy than to know God, and to know God is to know a heart of abundant generosity and grace.  May we constantly strive to not only know Him better, but to turn around and extend to others the glorious blessings that He has bestowed upon us.  But, we must first recognize the many blessings that He gives!

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” ~ James 1: 17

If we recognize that blessings we have as gifts from God, then we also recognize that we are not the ones who created them for ourselves.  They are not ours to hoard, but ours to release back out to others in love.  This is the foundation for a generous heart: gratitude.

Without gratitude we think we are entitled to our blessings, rather than recipients of the freely given gifts from a loving Abba.

Take some time today to recognize the many blessings and gifts that God has given to your life, even if they are imperfect in some way.  Meditate on how these things have shaped your life for the better, and then recognize that all your good things in life are directly and freely given from Him in Love.

Once this concept truly sinks in, you will recognize that everyone else around you is also a beloved child of God in need of hope and provision.  And, as His hands and feet, we too are to be at work co-laboring with Christ to meet the needs of others, in both the small, practical ways, and the amazingly miraculous ones.

Freely you have received; freely give.” ~ Matt. 10:8

The greater the blessing and abundance God has bestowed upon your life, the greater the opportunity to reflect that same generosity to others.  And, oh, what a glorious delight generosity is to the soul.  Enjoy the fruits and intrinsic rewards of a free and generous heart.  And, in turn bless others with the praiseworthy gift it brings!

Shalom,

Julie
