Pursue them? Jesus did? - Divorce Minister

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

-Hebrews 10:26-27, NIV

Christians are notorious for assuming the right course of action is pursuit when dealing with a cheater.

Pastors and other Christian leaders point to Jesus’ pursuit of a sinful church as the paradigm faithful spouses must follow. However, they do not take into account the full counsel of Scripture when doing this.

Look at this passage from Hebrews 10…

What I see in the passage is God drawing a hard line with those who are actively and repeatedly rejecting Him. This is what unrepentant cheaters are doing. In fact, they often offer up contemptuous responses to their victims whenever the faithful spouses ask them to stop their infidelities.

The Hebrews 10:26-27 is the biblical text to apply in these situations.

It is not like the cheater was unaware of what is expected of them. They freely entered into the marriage vowing to their spouse and God to remain faithful.

Like this passage, I believe trying to reconcile with such willful sinners is a fruitless exercise in most cases. Pursuit is NOT what good, biblical advice in these situations. Cheaters have decided to pursue hedonism over godliness.

The wise faithful spouses refuses to stand in the way of the cheater’s pursuit of their chosen, false god. They respect that the cheater has chosen to worship and serve a different god.
