Living Under The Shadow Of His Wings

The question at hand is, are you living under the shadow of God’s wings? Technically your response only requires a yes or no answer.

If your answer is “no,” then what do you say to this question? Why not? You see, Psalm 91 contains some great promises for those who answered “yes.”

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”      Psalms 91:1

Recently on a beautiful summer day, I went outside to work in the yard. With the sun shining bright, it made for a very warm day.

But as I walked onto the front porch I was no longer in the heat of the sun. At that point, I enjoyed the shadow of the porch.

On another occasion, a rainstorm came through our neighborhood. So I decided to watch it as I stood on the front porch. This time the porch served as my shelter.

These serve as simple visuals of what the Psalmist said in our verse for today.

A front porch can only offer us shade and shelter from the elements. The Lord will do much more. If are you living under the shadow of God’s wings we have this assurance.

This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. Psalm 91:2-3

What Does Under the Shadow of His Wings Mean?

Shadow of God

The Psalmist went on to give us the following illustration.

He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. Psalm 91:4

This is how a mother bird protects her young. She covers it with her outstretched wing while scaring off the intruder. God’s feathers and wings are His faithful promises.

His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Psalm 91:4

We Need Not Fear

The Psalmist went on to tell us that we need not fear or dread anything.

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Psalm 91:5-6

God’s promises don’t stop there for those living under the shadow of His wings. Verse 9 says if you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter. Here are some benefits.

  • No evil will conquer you;
  • No plague will come near your home.
  • He will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.
  • They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. Psalm 91:1-12

The first 13 verses of this Psalm contain words of encouragement. They’re given to those living under the shadow of His wings. To them, this is who God is and what He does.

Verse 14, however, started a quote directly from God. It begins with “The Lord says,” followed by these words.

  • I will rescue those who love me.
  • I will protect those who trust in my name.
  • When they call on me, I will answer;
  • I will be with them in trouble.
  • And I will rescue and honor them.
  • I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation. Psalm 91:14-16

How to Live under the Shadow of God’s Wings

Maybe you’re not sure how you can live under the shadow of His wings.

It can only happen when you accept what Jesus did for you. He died on the cross and rose from the grave to forgive you of your sins. Here’s what the Apostle Paul told us.

For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us. Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
