Obedience – God’s Love Language

We are all familiar with the bible verse:

“Obedience is better than sacrifice and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22, NLT).

This means that God is more invested in our ability to hear and obey Him first and foremost than the service we give to Him. Controversial, I know! Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive. The truth is that part of our obedience to God is that we serve Him (James 2:24, NLT). But, God wants us to follow His leading for us specifically above all else (1 John 5:2-3, NLT, 1 John 2:3-5, NLT).

So, what is God speaking to us right now as individuals? What instructions is He giving us to follow?

This is how we lavish our love on our savior. The song ‘My Worship‘ by Phil Thompson says ‘And no one can worship You for me, For all the things You have done for me.’

It’s the same with obedience. Nobody can obey God for us or on our behalf. We have individual instructions that God has given us and we must do our best to adhere to them.

What God is instructing you to do in this season of your life may not make sense to others and you may not see anybody else around you doing that but we are held accountable to a higher power than the court of public opinion.

Let’s not be easily swayed, distracted or too captivated by the going-ons that is happening around us but we must be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

A friend of mine (shout out to you Fikayo!) reminded me recently about the blog post on God’s love languages and how we can cater to the ultimate Lover of Our Soul.

It’s time to go back to our first love. To re-discover our first love and pour our affections and attention on Him. Who wouldn’t want to be courted over and over again? We speak sweet words to Him and commune with Him in prayer and use our words of affirmation to speak His refreshing words back over our own lives. We spend quality time with Him and fulfill His love languages. We shower gifts on Him by providing for His flock and those in need as He stated in His Word. We live a life of service by working to support His ministry on Earth. We are physically present by showing up to fellowship with the brethren and being His hands and feet within our community.

excerpt from ‘Back to the Basics’

You might think but God is saying anything explicitly to me right in this season! God is always speaking to us! We are just too distracted to be able to hear Him speak. Trust me if you dedicate everyday of the next week to intentionally reading the word of God, there is no way God won’t speak to you. Try it and come back at the end of the week and leave a comment on this post!

But, sometimes it does not have to be a specific instruction or regarding a specific thing. There are many instructions, ready to go for us already in the word of God.

The truth is that embedded in the midst of all the activities we partake in should be a love and devotion to God that is evident in our obedience to Him and His word.

May God help us develop the spiritual discipline to incline our ears to Him and what He might be speaking to us at every point in time.

Sacrifice of Worship

One of the ways we can live that life of obedience is by worshipping. Worship is what we do to get to the heart of the Father. We consecrate ourselves and we give God our full attention. May the Holy Spirit teach us how to worship God in Spirit and in truth and how to offer Him the true sacrifice of our worship. (part 2 loading…)
