The Privileged Life: Pray for America
“So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, will give You thanks forever; we will show forth Your praise to all generations.” (Psalm 79:13)
Would you please pray for the United States of America?
We’re facing yet another contentious presidential election. Like many people here, I’ve been disheartened by continual strife (fueled by the media), negative news, international threats, inflation, lack of effective leadership, and more.
Most discouraging is the decline of faith in God among our citizens. What was once called good is now evil, and vice versa. Jesus Christ is ignored or blasphemed. America has turned its back on Him.
And then, I remember—God is still on His throne.
Jesus is Lord of the entire universe, even if our country fails to acknowledge Him. His power, justice, and mercy will prevail, for His glory, regardless of our woeful ways. He is ready to redeem and restore His people for His purposes. And, He hears our prayers.
I respectfully request that you join hands with me, wherever you are, to lift up our nation in prayer for the next three months. Let’s petition God for His intervention and blessings—copy and print the prayer card (at bottom of this devotion) for your daily prayer time.

May God grant our nation His mercy, favor, and direction—and may He empower us to be bold in sharing His good news. Together, let’s shine His light into the darkened corners of the world and bring His love, joy, and peace to those who are downtrodden in these troubled times.
A PRAYER FOR AMERICA
Heavenly Father, we praise You for the amazing grace and blessings You have poured out upon our nation in the past. Thank You for this current period of peace in the history of America, and may You continue to keep us in the palm of Your hands.
Lord, we have fallen away from You. We have forgotten that You are our Sovereign King and that all things in our lives are purposed for Your glory. We have turned away from following Your commandments, from loving others, from worshipping You in spirit and truth, from seeking You. Our hearts have grown selfish and cold. We ask you to forgive us and preserve us from Your wrath. Restore our souls.
Give us strength and discipline to fight the spiritual battles that face us, so that we may honor You. Toward that end, we ask You to fulfill our petitions for the following gifts:
- Revival—Send Your Holy Spirit to be wind and fire among our people, to draw us back to You, to renew our hearts and minds in worship and service.
- Repentance—Call us to turn away from wickedness and deceit. Let Your truth set us free from the bondage of sin and open the doors to following Your footsteps.
- Faithfulness—Give us Your strength and resources to be salt and light, to spread Your gospel of peace at home and abroad, to follow Your truth in Your word.
- Compassion and harmony—Fill our hearts with Your love for our families and neighbors, that we may be generous and compassionate with those in need. Let Your kindness guide our words and deeds.
- Godly leadership—Raise up Christian public servants who seek to follow Your word and do Your will. Strengthen those already serving. Encourage them in the fight against evil, and build them up in Your integrity.
- Growth of Your church—Let Your churches stand as beacons of light, lifting high Your cross of salvation to discouraged souls. Do not let Your people grow weary of teaching Your word.
- Protection—Preserve our nation from attacks…from Satan, from our enemies, from warring entities within our borders. Make us alert to dangers, and keep us from being enslaved by other nations. Shield our first responders and military members who are in harm’s way.
- Wisdom and direction for the future—Provide us with Your wisdom generously, and return Americans to following Your word. Lead us forward in unity.
We praise You for being the God who hears and answers prayer. Please bless our country with Your presence and power. Return us to the roots of our faith and a genuine trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
