My 10 Days in Israel as a Christian - An Open Letter

Dear fellow Christians,

I recently had the life-changing opportunity to spend ten days in Israel this past December and January, thanks to the non-profit advocacy organization Allied Voices for Israel (AVI). While I met many unique Israeli and Palestinian individuals, the most memorable experience was meeting Jonathan Elkhoury, a Christian Lebanese-Israeli.

Jonathan shared his touching story of how his family found refuge in Israel after fleeing Southern Lebanon due to persecution and repression by the Iranian-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah.  His story deeply moved me and reinforced how inclusive and welcoming Israeli society truly is—far different from how it is often portrayed in the media.

I experienced Israel's inclusivity firsthand by freely visiting significant holy sites such as the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, attending Shabbat dinners, and lighting Hanukkah candles for the first time—all while proudly wearing my cross necklace as a symbol of my faith throughout the entirety of the trip.

Meanwhile, across the Middle East and Africa, Christians face unimaginable hardships. In many countries, they are persecuted, their churches destroyed, their families torn apart, and their voices silenced. Whether in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, or Libya, Christians endure brutal repression, often at the cost of their own lives for simply expressing their faith.

Yet, in a region so dark and hostile, Israel stands alone as a beacon of hope- a place where Christianity is not only tolerated but embraced and protected. Israel fights tirelessly against the same extremist forces that seek to harm Christians worldwide.

Groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, the Muslim Brotherhood, and ISIS spread hatred and violence, leaving many Christians displaced, persecuted, and without hope. Israel’s fight against these forces is not just a battle for its own survival but also for the protection of countless innocent lives, including other Christians in the region.

It should come as no surprise that, as Christians, we share a profound bond with the Jewish people. Jesus Himself was an Israelite, born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, and ministering in Jerusalem. Our faith is deeply rooted in Judaism, and through God’s covenant with Abraham, the foundation of our beliefs was laid.

As Psalm 122:6 reminds us: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure.” Supporting Israel is not just a political stance; it is an affirmation of our shared faith and values.

My time in Israel has only strengthened my belief that we, as Christians, must open our hearts and support Israel in her time of need. Let us stand united in faith, love, and unwavering strength against those who seek to divide us.

Sincerely,

Katie Mbakulo
