Called to Love

Bible

I was not called to this.

I didn’t hear a voice, nor did I have a keen intuitive sense that this was going to happen.

I did not and still am not quite sure, after 30 years, if I could even know how to define what it means to be a pastor’s wife.

It’s funny.  Those who think they have it figured out, probably have enemies.  Okay, maybe not enemies, but those who will decide that they definitely don’t like her.

Not so funny, really.  Everyone has preconceived ideas about what a minister’s wife should be, should do, and how she should act, dress and what kind of gifts or talents she should possess.

I have to say, after 30+ years of serving beside my husband in ministry, it does get easier.  Not because people have changed or I’ve learned how to endear them to me, but because I’ve changed.  I am the same sinner saved by grace, and I’m learning how to better extend that same grace to others, including my spouse.

And it starts with loving.

If I have the gift of prophecy
and understand all mysteries
and all knowledge,
and if I have all faith
so that I can move mountains
but do not have love, I am nothing.  I Corinthians 13:2

Loving others the way God does can only come from within.  When we welcome His presence into our lives, we begin to see those around us through His eyes…

And somewhere along the way you have to open your eyes to who you are.

I am a child of God.  He is my Heavenly Father, and I love my Creator, Savior, Sustainer.  He is the reason I am alive for one more day. My plans, goals, and purpose for living come from Him.  I answer to Him Alone.

I am a wife.  Friend, lover, companion.  I love him and he loves me.  I fill a role that no one else can.  I walk beside him as He leads.  He doesn’t lead perfectly and I don’t follow perfectly, but I am his biggest cheerleader and he is my hero. We’re in this together.

I am a mother and a Nana.  I love filling those shoes!  My nurturing role continues… and I’m needed.  I am loved.  And it is still my responsibility to teach younger generations about God and tell them who He is and what He has done.

I am me.  I am called to be the best that I can be.  There is no one else that fulfill the plan that God has for me. He has blessed me to bless.  He has gifted me to serve.

And He has loved me to love.

Oh, and yes, I’m still a pastor’s wife.  Because I love God and I love my husband, I guess that means I am called.

Wherever you are, whatever your role, love will always call you.

Love will call you by name and define who you are.

LOVE because He first loved us

Will you answer His call?

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35
