    Unlimited: Life and Peace

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace (Romans 8:6).

We all want life, and we all want peace. What we experience in our minds will lead us to enjoy life and have peace. So, who governs your mind?

Most people in the world think that they are in control of their own thoughts and entirely free to choose their own views. This is reinforced by a society that values freedom, individuality, and choice, above everything else.

To think that we, as weak human beings, are entirely autonomous, is foolishness. It is true that we all have free will; however, that freedom isn’t absolute. In reality it is constrained in many ways. Your free will is constrained by your upbringing, culture, education, and your experiences in life.

…the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

In terms of the spiritual realm, we human beings are weak and fragile in the face of the forces of evil arrayed against us. Our minds are as weak as our bodies. Even in the Bible stories of God’s spiritual heroes, such as Abraham, Moses, and David, we find continual weaknesses and failure. However, ultimately, they continued to choose to align their minds to the Lord, and when they stumbled they allowed the Holy Spirit to continually bring their minds back to God.

We either serve God for righteousness or Satan for sin and death. There is no third option.

    Spiritual Application

You can help to answer the question of who governs your mind by the things on which you intentionally choose to focus. Think about your last 24 hours? On what has your mind focused. Do these things tend towards death, or do they tend toward life and peace?
