Are We Recognizing Jesus When We See Him - Melanie Redd
Scripture tells us that, on Easter morning, three women, went to Jesus’ tomb, to anoint his body with fragrant spices.
The Gospel of John notes that on this morning, Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb but when she arrived, she saw that the tomb was empty.
Heartbroken and confused, she stood outside the tomb weeping.
When the angels asked her why she was crying. she answered, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him. When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there and did not know that it was Jesus.”
The Road to Emmaus
The Gospel of Luke narrates the story of two men who were walking on the road to Emmaus.
As they walked they were discussing the events that had taken place.
Luke 24: 15-16 tells us, “While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.”

The Miraculous Catch of Fish
John 21: 1-4, tells us of another occurrence when Jesus was seen but not recognized.
“Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. They went out to fish but caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.”
Thoughts to Ponder
Why did Mary, the men on the road to Emmaus and the disciples not recognize Jesus?
His disciples walked with Him for three years. Mary also had been with him much of that time.
They knew Him well, yet they did not recognize Him.
There are differing theories as to why they did not recognize Him.
The most popular theory is that He was no longer an earthly being but was now a spirit being whose appearance had changed. We are not completely certain.
But, we do know that they didn’t recognize Jesus.
They knew Him well, yet they did not recognize Him. Click To Tweet
How Often Have We Missed Him?
Do we sometimes miss Jesus too?
As Christians, we should see Christ in the face of everyone; everyone from a king to a homeless man.
How many times have we been in His presence and not recognized Him?
My prayer is that we will become more aware of His presence in our lives and the lives of those around us.

In Closing
The words to a popular Christian song seem appropriate here: Holy Spirit by Kari Jobe.
There’s nothing worth more that could ever come close
No thing can compare, You’re our living hope
Your presence, Lord
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
There’s nothing worth more that will ever come close
No thing can compare, You’re our living hope
Your presence, Lord
I’ve tasted and seen of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free and my shame is undone
In your presence, Lord
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
Let us become more aware of Your presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
And, let us become more aware of Your presence
Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
Let us become more aware of Your presence
Yes. Let us experience the glory of Your goodness
Lord, your goodness, Lord
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord
