12 Foundations of New Jerusalem’s Wall
Revelation 21:14 says, “The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”
These foundations are not “the foundation,” which is Christ, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 3:10-11. Rather, the twelve foundations here are “the twelve apostles of the Lamb.” Today the church is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets (Eph. 2:20). Since in eternity there will be no more need of the prophets, the foundations of the holy city will consist only of the apostles.*
Because New Jerusalem is constituted with Christ in us, the function of the apostles and prophets is to minister Christ “the foundation” into us. Christ in us is our faith (Rom. 3:22; Gal. 3:26), our life (Rom. 8:10), our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (1 Cor. 1:30), our treasure (2 Cor. 4:7), our rich supply (Eph. 4:15-16), our hope of glory (Col. 1:27), and much more.
Today the gifted members (Eph. 4:11) of the Body of Christ minister Christ to us in order to perfect us all to gain and experience Christ. Then we participate in this work of ministry (4:12) for the building up of the Body. This continues until we all arrive at spiritual maturity (4:13) for New Jerusalem.
