7 Powerful Truths to Tell Yourself Every Day

The earliest years of my marriage and parenting journey were not the easiest for me.  I spent many years enduring emotional upset and imbalance as my thoughts became my enemy and attacked me in my greatest times of vulnerability and pain.

When events of the day became less than desirable, I would experience a tumultuous whirlwind of heartfelt destruction that spun me on my heels and turned my experience upside down.

Many of the thoughts that I held so dear in my mind, my long-known friends who I kept close because of their familiar company, were also my greatest enemies and the source of the drained life that I knew.  It was only during my walk with the Lord that He began to right my world through the renewing of my mind, while He whispered sweet nothings into my mind and helped to reveal the veiled deceit within me.

The experience that I have had while correcting the lies and unveiling the Truth has been the most life-changing and soul blessing journey for me, but it took a lot of little steps to make the journey and become renewed.

I had to allow myself to be patient with the process of transformation, becoming a person who lives in the world but is set apart from it by a protected inner self that is directly connected to the Source of all Life: my Abba.

This world is not always so easy to navigate, and today’s interconnected world produces many, many voices that can seem to be sources of perceived truth, but are truly paths of deceptive lies.  It takes work and intention to sift through the words to find Yahweh’s story that He is telling to all of us.

To help you along with your sifting journey, here are 7 scriptural truths to tell yourself each day to prevent the heart damage of the world.  The most essential point to remember about all Truth is that it is Truth because of its source, and it is True because He is the foundation of all creation.

In His image we are made; therefore, we are made like Him.  His characteristics are inherently built into our beings, but it takes a bit of work to uncover these essential Truths.

**A word of caution before we dig in: There will be readers who struggle with legalistic perfectionism and reject this list because they interpret it as self-righteous and dismissing of God’s Sovereignty or power and our sinfulness and undeserved nature.  If this is you, I encourage you to seek the Lord about this side of you that is closed off to seeing His hand of mercy and grace in our lives.  God seeks to release us from the burdens of our sins, not bind us up in a turmoil of self-hatred and self-abasement because of them.  “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened by the yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1) and “The Lord does not look at the things people look at.  People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).  We are not free to continue to walk in sin, but to be free from the belief systems that bind us up in un-forgiveness and self-loathing, as “there is no condemnation in Christ” (Romans 8:1).  I encourage you to pray on this matter and begin the heart work to know God at a whole other level of His love.**

I am awesome.

God has designed you with unique and amazing talents, gifts, personality traits, and thoughts that no one else in the whole of history has presented to this world.  He means for you to be willing to step out in faith to use and apply each and every one for His glory.

Self-hatred or disregard does not serve you, nor Him, and does not translate into an ability to recognize the inherent awesomeness of all the other people around you.  We can only treat others as far as we treat ourselves.  Take time to recognize your unique contribution to this world and seek Him for His path to follow Him into your purpose.

I am beautiful.

“You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.” ~ Song of Solomon 4:7

Maybe you just thought it was a message from a husband to a wife, but Song of Solomon contains some of the most beautiful examples of love and adoration that God holds for His bride, the Body of Christ.  You ARE beautiful, and He loves you just the way you are.  Your body is made perfectly and without flaw, regardless of what today’s society says.

While man’s perception of beauty and value is ever-changing, God’s is not.  If He says it, it is true.  There is nothing wrong with you at all.  You are beautiful and perfect, exactly as you are.

I am strong.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” ~ Deuteronomy 31: 6

There is a pervasive lie that has invaded the Church over the millenia that suggests that we are weak, unable to stand in the face of opposition, or to stand up for what is good and right.  Scripture, however, suggests quite the opposite.  God’s perspective is that we are an extension of Him (remember, we are made in His image), and He is not a pushover or victim.

You are strong.  You are capable.  You have power BECAUSE He is All-Powerful!  You can act…these are true, because HE is all of these things, and by extension, we are too.  The only difference is that He already knows who He is.  If you are His, you are strong, because you were made to be so.  Period.

I am able.

“I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” ~Philippians 4:13

It is easy in this world to believe the lies that we “can’t” do _____ (fill in the blank).  There is always someone to tear us down.  Always some thing getting in our way.  Always some reason to believe some desire is not possible.  And, yet, these are all matters of mental limitation.  Scripture promises that He can do anything, and He is not limited by anything of this world.

So, when we choose to believe that we are not able, we are limiting God and His ability to partner with us as we work to walk in the visions He has given us for this life.  If you have a vision and a dream in your heart, that is honoring of God and selfless in its center, the reality is He wants to walk that dream out with you, even if He reveals areas of tweaking and molding while you walk.  You ARE able, because HE is able.

I have a voice.

“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.  Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.  From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” ~ Ephesians 4: 14-16

Another pervasive lie that has taken root is that a “good Christian” stay quiet, is submissive, and never rocks the boat.  But, is this a consistent biblical principle?  It seems to me that pretty much every single person of honor and record within the entire Bible was a wave-maker and system-challenger of some kind.  Does it mean that we lash out in vengeance, or react in emotional outrage?  No.

We are still held to the standards of self-control, love, gentility, etc.  But, in order to “speak the Truth in love” we have to be willing to speak in the first place.  The way in which we speak the Truth reveals the heart condition behind the person.  We cannot be silent and expect to be salt and light.  And we cannot be unloving and also speak Truth.

The Way is found in the narrow road.

I have a choice.

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.  But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” ~ Joshua 24:15

In everything you have a choice.  You have a choice to let the hatred of others define your reality, or not.  You have a choice to open your mind up to the thoughts of others, or not.  You have a choice as to whether or not you will speak love to yourself in your self-speak.

You have a choice for whom you share your heart.  You have a choice for whether or not you let the biases of others determine your circumstances.  You have a choice.  You are not a slave unless you choose to subject yourself to slavery.  You are not a victim unless you tell yourself you are a victim.

You were made to be capable of choosing who you are, and since you are a Child of God, you (and everyone else) are made to be amazing.  Treat yourself that way.

I am loved.

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” ~ Psalm 145:8

This is a most central Truth that we must permit to wash over us regularly.  “God is love.”  There is no better word to describe His character that this central reality.  The problem is that love has become a corrupted concept for us in recent generations, so that today we can hardly recognize what Godly love really looks and feels like.

We are too dependent on an emotional episode to determine whether actions and words are truly loving.  God is love.  God loves you.  God loves His creations, and adores the intention He placed into it.

But, He is a gentleman, and does not force Himself upon others.  He respects the reality of choice that He built within our beings, and desires for us to be open to Him so that He can pour out His love upon us and it be well-received.

You ARE loved.  You are doted on.  You are valued.  You are adored.  No matter what the world shouts your way.

No matter what the many voices think, you are loved by an Almighty God!
