A Christian’s Perspective on Current Events - Evangelism %

How do we as Christians react, or respond to the turmoil that is going on all around us? What is a Christian’s perspective on current events? In Christianity, there is no room for racism or prejudice. I certainly don’t see any conditions listed in the Bible as to who the Lord loves.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

God Made No Exceptions

I didn’t read any exceptions in that promise, did you? So if God loves and accepts everyone, then we must do no less.

Look around at what is going on in our nation today? I understand there is an ongoing racial unrest that has been brought to the forefront which was sparked by the uncalled-for death committed by a police officer. Now because of a few bad apples in the apple cart of law enforcement, the cry has been made that we should get rid of law enforcement altogether

I would go along with that if we could keep people from breaking the law. Jesus gave us 2 commandments that if obeyed would fulfill the law and replace the law. So we could actually do away with the law if everyone would follow those two commandments which are; Love God and Love each other! The problem is we have a hard time getting many Christians to follow those two commandments. How could we expect people from the world to faithfully follow them?

Therefore there is a need for the law and since there are lawbreakers, there is a need for law enforcement for the safety of society in general. So, instead of throwing out all the apples, it would be best to just remove the bad ones.

How Should the Church Respond to These Trying Times?

The church has been called by God to be an influence in our world. The obvious question we should ask ourselves is, have we been? Jesus said we are “the salt of the earth,” and “the light of the world.”

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.  Matthew 5:13-5

Jesus said, “you are.” He did not say you should be, or you might be, or you will be. To those who belong to Him, they are the salt and the light. Why would Jesus choose salt as His illustration? I can think of three reasons.

A Christian’s Perspective Should be Salt and Light

First of all, salt is used for seasoning. What better way to influence the flavor of food than to season it with salt. When Jesus compared us to salt, He was calling us to be an influence in the world. Salt increases thirst. When Jesus met the woman at the well he said,

Those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. John 4:14

We are the salt of the earth called to increase a thirst for God in people. Jesus will satisfy their thirst with living water. Salt is a preservative. In Jesus’ day, it was what they preserved meats with. Rubbed into meats, salt delayed decay and spoiling. We are to be a preservative in the world. Our influence should be stopping corruption, preventing moral decay, and decomposition.

When Jesus started talking about light, everyone listening knew what He was talking about. Jerusalem was on a hill and there was no hiding it especially at night. A lamp usually stood in the middle of the room unhampered so its light could be the most effective. Then Jesus said, 

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:16 

How Should a Christian Participate?

With all the protests going on in cities all across our nation, a question that should be answered is, is it ok for a Christian to participate in a protest march? What is a Christian’s perspective on current events? It would all depend on that person’s motive for involvement. Listen to what God says in Isaiah 60 about His people and the light.

Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. …the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. Everything we do should bring glory to the Lord. Anytime we make a stand, it must be for the Lord and not for selfish ambition.

Right now our nation and our world are looking for an answer. The church is not the answer. The church is the catalyst to the answer. Jesus is and always has been the answer.
