Memorise: “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning” (Prov 9:9)
Read: Ruth 3:1-6
How did Ruth move into her new level of breakthrough? She received good counsel from her mother-in-law. Proverbs 20:18 says, “Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war”. When you are about to embark on an important journey, project or decision, good advice will be required for success.
The quality of your preparation will depend on how good your advisers are. If your advisers are ungodly, they will lead you astray with their advice.
They will ask you to do things that violate the Word of God. Of all counsellors, there is none as good as the Wonderful Counsellor (Isaiah 9:6). His knowledge is so vast that there is no area He cannot advise you on. If you want the best of counsels, go to Jesus Christ.
Proverbs 12:15 says it is wisdom to receive good advice. Are you already wise? Proverbs 9:9 says if you receive wise instruction, you will be wiser. Proverbs 1:8 says if you are truly a child of God, you will keep His instructions. An adage says, even if a child has as many clothes as an elder, he cannot have as many rags as the elder.
When counsel comes from someone older than you, take it into consideration, not minding his level of education or other limitations. In any case, there is nobody older than the One called the Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9).
In Proverbs 11:24-25, the scripture says if you want to be fat, be liberal. To the modern man, that does not make sense, hence most people including Christians are tight-fisted today.
Some years ago, I went to visit one of our pastors. I expected that he would entertain me with at least a bottle of coke. Then, it sold for five kobo. Meanwhile, I had a gift for him worth 100 kobo.
After we exchanged pleasantries, I took my seat. Instead of offering something, he kept greeting me and I greeted in return. Shocked at his level of stinginess, I greeted him and left with the cash gift I had planned to give to him. On the way, I stopped by a petrol station, bought two bottles of coke at 10 kobo and pocketed the change. God still withdraws big blessings from those who fail to release the little in their hands.
Do you take godly counsels? Or are you too big to be counselled by God-fearing leaders? Some pastors and leaders stopped taking counsels the day they were elevated in their place of work or ministry. Never shun good, godly and God- glorifying counsel!
Ask God to show you the little things you are ignoring that can rob you of His greater blessings. Attend to them now!
