Bible sermon: Esau selling his birthright

Read: Hebrews 12:16-17

Just as God can make the seeing to be blind and the hearing to be deaf, so also He can make the blind to see. A man who was born blind was healed in John 9:1-7. Are you physically challenged with your sight? The Lord will heal you this season. In 2 Kings 6:16-17, God opened the spiritual eyes of Elisha’s servant and he saw what physical eyes could not see. The Lord will open your spiritual eyes.If you can see spiritually, it will influence your actions and positively impact your destiny. “Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright” (Heb 12:16). Esau was described as a profane person – one who despised or looked down on holy or sacred things. In his ignorance, he rated material things such as food of more value than spiritual blessings.

He was blinded to the potentials that awaited him with a residual blessing. Esau was so blessed that he had 400 bodyguards. If only he had realized that the nation of Israel would bear the name of his younger brother because of that thoughtless act, he would have preferred to starve.

Another lesson is that we are what we are by grace alone. According to 1 Corinthians 15:10, it is the grace of God that made you to hear the Gospel and believe. It is grace that brought you salvation and enables you to do good or live holy. This is why we have nothing to be proud of. If you know where you are going, and how far you still have to go compared with your present location, there would be no basis for pride.

Similarly, it is possible to live in the midst of miracles but never partake of it. This was Gehazi’s experience recorded in 2 Kings 5:20-27. He wined, dined and slept with the most powerful man on the face of the earth during his day, yet he was not affected by the miracles but became a casualty of that power.

He was blinded spiritually. If his eyes were opened, he would not have taken the gift that would transfer the sickness of Naaman on him and his generation. Money is good but very limited. But with the anointing, there is no limitation. What you work for will determine how you will be paid. Ask God to open your eyes today! Are you profane like Esau?

Lord Jesus, intervene and help me with a change of mindset regarding whatever is making me exalt material things above spiritual things.
