Christ's View of Shame - Denise Pass

Christ's View of Shame

Christ’s view of shame reveals that we can be set free from shame, too.

“For the joy set before him, he endured the Cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” —Hebrews 12:2

Christ’s View of Shame: The shame of sin

As a new believer, I often spent time singing worship songs that I fully didn’t comprehend. Some terms seemed distant and foreign, and as I watched others sing in harmonious unison every week at church, I chimed in, hoping my countenance would not betray my lack of deep understanding.

Christ’s View of Shame: Christ bore our shame

During my days as a new believer, one thing I struggled with was the relationship between sin and shame.

It was one thing to be forgiven for my sins, but letting go of the shame was another matter. But both shame and our sins are washed clean through Christ. Nonetheless, cultural shame is a learned habit and took time to overcome.

Christ’s View of Shame: Scorning our Shame

Over the years, I learned that every element of shame was absorbed on the Cross, regardless of the source. Christ chose to scorn shame. I could, too.

Letting go of shame, it’s hold releases from our souls. Joy and peace returned as I understood that I could rest in His work and not my performance. I could let go of trying to be enough or fixing things in my own strength. I could finally derive strength from the truth of His word and live in freedom.

Christ’s View of Shame: Freedom in Christ

Christ’s victory over shame is ours, too. We don’t have to let shame master us anymore. Shame off you, friends!
