Don’t act on impulse, act on God’s will
This post is part of the Five Minute Friday blog link-up. Where I join up with a community of writers and bloggers of all ages and stages who gather around a single-word prompt to free-write, unscripted, unedited, for five minutes. This week’s word prompt is {{IMPULSE}}
Impulses are sudden, unplanned urges to act. They can be good or bad, but they often lead us to make decisions that we later regret. It’s important to learn how to control our impulses so that we can follow God’s will.
The Bible teaches us that we’re all sinners and that our sinful nature often drives our impulses. However, God has given us the Holy Spirit to help us overcome our sins and to live a life of obedience to Him.
When we’re tempted to act on an impulse, we need to ask ourselves if it is in line with God’s will. If not, we shouldn’t do it and ask the Holy Spirit for help.
Remembering that our impulses are not always bad like impulse purchases, we can’t afford or reckless behavior, is important. Sometimes, they can lead us to do things that are good and helpful. For example, we might be impulsively moved to help someone in need or to share our faith with someone who doesn’t know Christ.
It’s important to learn to discern between good and bad impulses and act on the good ones while turning away the bad ones. It’s not always easy, but it is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit. Just ask.
