Getting Fat On The Word - Jewell Utt
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
It’s a privilege to sit in church and hear the Word of God preached every week. In many countries around the world Christianity is illegal. The free expression of congregational worship is prohibited, forcing the Church to operate underground. These covert ministries inspire and challenge us to recognize the depths of our freedom. At great expense, people readily share the precious nuggets they’ve received from the underground church with others. Hearing their stories is an education in foreign differences.
This same eagerness is not evident in the free church. Having plenty diverts our attention from the main thing. Visiting missionaries report how congregations are spreading every new morsel of truth with urgency. We receive truth in bowlfuls each week through Bible study, media ministries, and church; yet the same fervency doesn’t exist. It makes me wonder where Satan has a greater hold. Are we captive to receiving and not giving? Exercising spiritual muscles in accordance with how much we ingest is vital. Spiritual knowledge that’s balanced with God’s mission brings true freedom.
How eager are you to share the gospel with those you love? Active faith disciples others and fervently serves in the body of Christ; the church. James says we must be doers of the Word, and not just hearers. Asaph explained in Psalms, the importance of sharing our faith that others will put their confidence in God. Exercising our spiritual muscles by serving and sharing the Word of God will strengthen our core; while simply taking it in will make us fat.
Are you overeating the Bread of Life or sharing precious morsels of truth?
