How does lent invite us to journey through desolation and discovery?

Lent is a journey we take as a community, following Jesus as he prepares for his ultimate sacrifice. We consider our lives, ask for forgiveness for our transgressions, and work to get closer to God during Lent. There are two primary themes to this journey: desolation and discovery.

Desolation in Lent

Though it may seem like a big word, desolation is actually very straightforward. It refers to a state of being empty, depressed, or alone. To remember Jesus' sacrifice, we consciously give up things we enjoy during Lent, like chocolate or television. Although it can be difficult, it aids in our comprehension of Jesus' emotions during his trial. Do you recall Jesus' forty-day and forty-night fast in the desert? Like us, he was weak and hungry during Lent.

Discovery in Lent

Giving up something we love frees up mental and emotional space. We can use that time for Bible reading, prayer, or community service. During this time, we learn new things about God and ourselves. We can find our purpose during Lent, as Jesus did when fasting and discovering his mission.

Also, it allows us to discover our purpose and develop spiritually, strengthening our bond with God. As a result of this development, we gain a better knowledge of our faith and a closer relationship with God, which enables us to apply our beliefs to our everyday lives.

Thus, Lent allows us to travel through aridity and exploration with Jesus. We find solace in the knowledge that Jesus is aware of our difficulties and in his sacrifice when we are depressed or lonely. And as we learn new things about God and ourselves, we get closer to him and develop into better selves. So let's welcome this Lenten journey with open minds and hearts, knowing that God is at our side the entire time.
