Measuring Wisdom

Compared to the wisdom of others, I could come out on the short end of the stick or I might look as grand as an oak.

Proverbs has taught us that being “wise in our own eyes” is a sure sign that you are not wise at all, so if we see wisdom in its correct form, it is something only to be gained by the knowledge we glean from God’s Word and the practical application of it.

“Every word of God is pure, He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.”  Proverbs 30:5

Proverbs 30 starts with a man named Agur confessing that compared to God, his wisdom is so small that it can’t be measured.

I can relate, can you?

If you’ve ever been on a ship in the middle of the ocean, to the Continental Divide or the Grand Canyon, you know the vastness of God’s creation and the chasm between what we know and our limited perspective can’t even see.  Our world is full of wonders our minds can barely conceive.  What little wisdom we have cannot compare to the wisdom of the Almighty.

No wonder my first response in those moments is similar to a “Wow, God!”

The comparisons in this chapter bring to light in a similar way some drastic differences in our respect for God’s sovereignty.  Respect is a word often used by parents and teachers to imply that a certain recognition of the value or authority of another.  When we speak of God, respect denotes a certain reverence, or awe.

From respecting His creation to understanding the limits of our own comprehension, wisdom is measured not by how much we know, or how much we even understand how everything works in this complicated world; wisdom is measured by our willingness to trust that God is all-knowing and all-powerful, and we.are.not.

“If you have been foolish by exalting yourself, or if you’ve been scheming, put your hand over your mouth.”  Proverbs 30:32

We’re nearing the end of Proverbs, and I am kind of sad, but also relieved.  It took a lot out of me to blog every day, but very much worth it.  I may not be more wise than I was before, but I do feel like God has opened my eyes to truths that I didn’t see before.  Don’t you love how He does that?  These ancient words are relevant for today–nothing else can compare this book called The Holy Bible.  Treasure it.  Store it up in your heart and mind and it will transform the way you act and think.

I am in awe of this Mighty God looking down at me and saying,  “I have written this for you”!

“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book.  But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name.”  John 20:31
