New Jerusalem Seen in Ephesians, 11

In Ephesians 1 Paul prayed for God’s revelation of His purpose to us. In the latter part of chapter 3 he prayed for our experience. He asked that the Father “would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit into the inner man” (3:16). Glory here ties this to New Jerusalem, the city of glory.

New JerusalemOurt inner man is our human spirit, regenerated by the Spirit (John 3:6) and indwelt by Christ (Rom. 8:10). We need to be out of our doubts and emotions into our spirit so that we may experience Christ in the ways described in the verses following 3:16.

Ephesians 3:17 presents the first result of strengthening, “that Christ may make His home in your hearts through faith.” Christ must occupy our heart so that He becomes our living and we magnify Him (Phil. 1:20) both now and unto New Jerusalem.

Verses 17b to 18 present the next step, “that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be full of strength to apprehend with all the saints what the breadth and length and height and depth are.” Christ is “the One who fills all in all” (1:23); He is unlimited. We can apprehend this fact corporately and we can explore Christ now and into eternity.

Verse 19a continues this step: “and to know the knowledge-surpassing love of Christ.” When Christ makes home in our hearts we can know what is knowledge-surpassing.

Verse 19b has another step of the home-making, “that you may be filled unto all the fullness of God.” This fullness will express  the unsearchable riches of Christ which God has wrought into us. This expression will continue into New Jerusalem.

Do You Feel Accepted or Rejected?

I went to bed, pulled the covers over my head, and had a big ole pity party. Once again, I had been rejected…come in second place…told I wasn’t quite what “they” were looking for. The scarlet letter loomed large. It wasn’t an A like Hester Prynne’s in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book I had read in high school, but a big fat R that I chose to wear when life turned ugly. Read more...

        Sleeping and Waiting

Sleep is crucial to our health. It’s our body’s time to restore itself and make sure we’re ready for the day ahead! Waiting, in a way, is like the “sleep” portion of our faith. While we wait, God works. And imagine all the incredible work He’s doing!
