New Jerusalem Seen in Ephesians, 14
Ephesians 4:2-6 emphasize our oneness, which is for now and unto eternity in New Jerusalem. From 4:7 the emphasis is on multiple gifts for various functions in the one Body of Christ.
Verse 4:7 tells us, “to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” Grace is Christ as our supply today and in New Jerusalem. More in these posts: one two three.
The next verses are about Christ’s ascension. Then 4:11 says, “And He Himself gave some as apostles and some as prophets and some as evangelists and some as shepherds and teachers.” Jesus Christ is the reality of each of these four types of gifted persons. He is the Apostle (Heb. 3:1), Prophet (Acts 3:22-23), Evangelist (Eph. 2:17), Shepherd (John 10:11), and Teacher (Matt. 23:8, 10). He will be the same to us in New Jerusalem.
Besides Jesus Christ as the reality of these four gifts, there are also some of His followers whom He has constituted with Himself as a gift. A record of His apostles being sent out is throughout the New Testament. And on the foundations of the wall of New Jerusalem are “the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb” (Rev. 21:14).
