Renewed First

Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Ask someone what it looks like to "not conform," and most people picture the same thing: standing apart. Refusing to go along. Holding a line while everyone else moves. It takes nerve, and most of us respect people who can do it.

Paul, writing to a small group of believers trying to survive inside the Roman Empire, reaches for a specific word here — pattern. Not fashion, not opinion, but pattern — the kind of word you'd use for a mold. Something poured in from outside, pressing a shape onto whatever's inside it.

He's already spent this letter naming exactly what that mold looks like — a culture quick to judge, quick to condemn, quick to decide who's in and who's out. And here's the uncomfortable part: none of that ever feels like conforming from the inside. It just feels like being reasonable. Which is exactly how a mold works. It doesn't announce itself. It just quietly takes the shape it was cut to make.

But Paul doesn't leave it there. One word turns the whole sentence around — but — and where he says the real change has to start is not where most of us would guess.
