Singing, Now and in New Jerusalem
Hebrews 2:12 quotes Psalm 22:22, “I will declare Your name to My brothers; in the midst of the church I will sing hymns of praise to You.” I is the Lord Jesus, “He who sanctifies” in verse 11, and My brothers are all the believers, “those who are being sanctified” in verse 11. Your name refers to the the Father.
The Lord Jesus sings in the midst of our singing; we need to sing praises to our Father so that He can sing in our midst. This is certainly our singing in this age and probably will continue into eternity in New Jerusalem.
Ephesians 5:18-19 exhort us, “be filled in spirit…singing and psalming with your heart to the Lord.” This too is certainly for our Christian life now and very likely will continue unto New Jerusalem since there is no need for such singing and psalming to stop.
Colossians 3:16 is similar, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…singing with grace in your hearts to God.” May our hearts be rich with grace for this singing day by day. This grace comes in Christ Himself, as in John 1:14, 16-17, so it will surely be present in New Jerusalem and we should expect to be full and singing to God there.
