The Abbott’s Test: The Place Where No One Watches

The Story:
To teach a group of envious monks about the true essence of integrity, a wise Abbott gave them each a singular task. He handed them each a live bird and gave a standard that seemed simple, yet was impossible to meet:
"Go and kill this bird, but only in a place where NO ONE is watching you."
Eager to satisfy the Abbott, most monks quickly scurried away. They sought absolute secrecy. One went deep into a dark forest, another found a shrouded cave, and another locked himself inside his own room, securing the door. Believing they were completely hidden from any observer, they killed their birds and returned to the monastery triumphant.
Only the youngest, most humble monk returned hours later, empty-handed, still gently cradling his live bird. He looked weary and defeated.
"Abbott... I have failed," he whispered, presenting the living creature.
The Abbott, seeing the live bird, asked, "Why didn't you fulfill the command?"
The monk replied humbly, "Teacher, I tried to find a place where no one was watching..."
A gentle, holy understanding filled the room as he concluded.
"...But wherever I went, GOD was always watching me."
The Abbott smiled. The monk had understood the greatest truth of the Christian walk: he lived his entire life Coram Deo—before the face of God.
Hebrews 4:13 (NLT)
"Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable."
