The Trees Are Clapping - Jewell Utt
The trees are clapping. It is not a mistake. As I stroll the beautiful landscape of fall, their cheers are evident. So vibrant and robust that they are falling out of their seats!
But why I ask?
Why cheer? What has happened?
Half of the country is revolting, half are breathing a sigh of relief. Both viewing the other as remarkably unbalanced. Stocks are down, stocks are up. Police are being killed. Babies are being born.
The waters are rising and the winds are blowing.
The garbage dump, a contrast to the grandest of canyons.
Wars abound, slavery devalues, the strong prey on the weak.
Trafficking, drug abuse, suicide, pornography, hackers, bullies.
And Yet…
The Trees….They Clap
I studied them.
Pondered their plight.
Stripped of their beauty.
Left to face a cold, dismal season of grey.
Naked.
Are they stupid? Ignorant? Don’t they realize that snow and ice will soon weigh them down? Probably break a few of their branches?
Yet The Trees
They nest the birds,
Open arms for acrobatic squirrels,
Harbor chipmunks to scamper and play and rest.
And yes they clap.
Expressing their life with
Joy
Peace
Strength
No matter what their season of change will bring.
They stand
Then I realized,
They are looking up.
Reaching for the skies.
Stretching for Heaven.
Holding hands with God.
