As a children’s pastor during the popularity of the Harry Potter series, Becky Fischer was troubled by how many Christian parents and church leaders dismissed concerns about its portrayal of magic, seeing it as harmless entertainment. If it was entertainment, then it wasn’t real. If it wasn’t real, then it was not harmful nor forbidden, as warned about in the Scriptures. Without concern, we could then haply ignore or sidestep the stern warnings in the Bible about these issues and indulge without guilt. This led her first to write a children’s book, Magic & the Bible, to help educate kids from a biblical perspective on how God views paranormal activities. It was for children to read themselves or for families to read together. (See that book here.)

But leaders urged her to convert this book into a children’s church curriculum to be taught in churches. That is the curriculum you have here. It can be used any time of year. However, it is most ideal for the weeks leading up to the American holiday of Halloween, when our whole nation is focused on this holiday of witches, zombies, vampires, skeletons, graves, magic, and witchcraft–a holiday that, no matter what costumes you wear, still celebrates death. Our focus, however, is on the Kingdom of Light, which is very real, and how it overpowers the Kingdom of Darkness, which is very real. We make sure we concentrate on the power of the name and the blood of Jesus and how we should view the various topics from a biblical perspective.
