Trust The Power Of God When Life Seems Dark
Have you ever walked through a season where evil seemed louder than God’s goodness? In those times, trust the power of God, especially when darkness feels stronger than light.
The Psalmist in Psalm 74 faced the reality where evil seemed to dominate goodness. The temple lay in ruins, Israel’s enemies mocked God, and violence spread across the land.
The people felt crushed and forgotten. Yet, in the middle of despair, the Psalmist boldly prayed. He turned his eyes from the devastation to the Creator of day and night, summer and winter.
Both day and night belong to you; you made the starlight and the sun. You set the boundaries of the earth, and you made both summer and winter. Psalm 74:16-17
This passage teaches us how to respond when life feels broken. Remember the power of God and His promises. Cry out for the intervention of the one who holds all creation in His hands.
The Psalmist spoke about God’s sovereignty. He designed both day and night, as well as boundaries and seasons. These verses remind us that nothing spins out of God’s control.
Darkness may feel permanent, but the One who created light still reigns. God holds all power, so when chaos swirls, declare what God has done. Speak His authority over the universe.
The same God who divided day from night also divides your trouble from your peace. Seasons of pain do not last forever because the God of seasons rules over them.
Appeal to God’s Honor
See how these enemies insult you, Lord. A foolish nation has dishonored your name. Psalm 74:18
The Psalmist shifted his focus from personal pain to God’s reputation. The enemies of God disregarded His power and mocked His name, not just His people.
Their defiance targeted the Creator. When we pray, we can boldly appeal to God’s honor. Jesus taught us the same principle in the Lord’s Prayer when He said, “may your name be kept holy.”
We must seek God’s glory foremost above everything else. Our deepest desire should mirror the Psalmist’s plea—that God’s name shines even in suffering.
When trials come, pray a prayer similar to this one. “Lord, let your name receive glory through my life. As you display your power, Oh God, use this challenge to reveal your greatness.”

Trust God’s Heart for His People
Don’t let these wild beasts destroy your turtledoves. Don’t forget your suffering people forever. Remember your covenant promises, for the land is full of darkness and violence! Don’t let the downtrodden be humiliated again. Instead, let the poor and needy praise your name. Psalm 74:19-21
The image of turtledoves reflects vulnerability and value. God treasures His people like delicate birds. When we feel crushed, God notices. His covenant love does not expire.
Notice the prayer: “Remember your covenant promises.” God never forgets His word. His promises serve as an anchor for us when our circumstances scream otherwise.
The enemy wants humiliation to silence our worship. The Psalmist, however, prayed for the opposite. He prayed that the poor and needy would defy the enemy’s power by praising God.
When hardship pushes you down, remember—your story does not end in defeat. The prophet Isaiah tells us about when God’s anger rises against our enemies.
To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3

Cry Out for the Power of God to Intervene
When darkness overtakes our lives, it won’t last forever, even though it seems like it will. You have the power within you to call out to God. The Psalmist did that very thing amid his enemies.
Arise, O God, and defend your cause. Remember how these fools insult you all day long. Don’t overlook what your enemies have said or their growing uproar. Psalm 74:22-23
The final prayer in this Psalm reflects faith, not doubt. When we cry out for God to move, we admit our dependence on Him and His power. He wants us to constantly depend on Him.
The enemy’s roar may grow louder, but God’s voice still thunders above the noise. Our part? Like the Psalmist, keep praying, keep trusting, and keep asking God to defend His cause.

Application: How to Walk This Out Today
- Start with Praise: Begin your prayers by remembering the power of God in creation.
- Align with His Glory: Pray for God’s name to shine brighter than your struggle.
- Hold His Promises: Write down a covenant promise and speak it over your situation.
- Pray Boldly: Ask God to act, not timidly, but with confidence in His sovereignty.
Seasons of darkness test our trust, but they cannot cancel God’s covenant love. The Psalmist reminds us to anchor our faith in the God who owns the day and night.
Our God, who holds the power of the universe, keeps His promises, and He rises to defend His people. When your life feels broken, by faith, speak the following truth:
“My God reigns over every season. He remembers His promises. And as a child of God, He will act for His glory and my good.”
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28
Lord, you rule over day and night. You created the stars and the sun. Darkness covers the land, but your light still shines. God, silence the roar of the enemy and let your power fill the earth.
