Why Should I Read the Bible? - Jewell Utt

In an age of endless self-help resources, why would anyone consider reading the Bible?  Because we are in day 60 of a national lock-down, and we have a golden opportunity to research the most important questions of life.

    • What is truth?
    • Where did we come from?
    • Why are we here?
    • What happens when we die?

    Here are the short answers:

    • Truth is the God-breathed inerrant words of the Bible and found in the person of Jesus Christ.
    • We were created by God, in His image, to exist forever.
    • God has a unique purpose for our lives. It revolves around relationships, first with Him and then each other. Our choice is whether to follow in obedience or do our own thing.
    • When we die, we either go to heaven or hell for eternity.

These questions hold such importance, they deserve a closer look. Numerous avenues are available to help you understand the Bible, (sermons, Bible studies, inspirational speakers, books, magazines, blogs…). But they should not replace the personal revelation that comes from reading it for yourself. The historical accounts lead to the discovery of principles that relate directly to Your circumstances. This makes a personal connection with the Bible invaluable to your life.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT) says: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work.”

We are living in uncertain times. Never in history have we seen a global lockdown of society. Nor do we know when we will get back to life as usual. The News reports warn us that when we return to life, it will be to a “New Normal.” This is the perfect opportunity to create some new norms in our lives today.

Ephesians 5:15-16 (NIV) says, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

Mother’s Day has recently passed, making me recall my mom’s constant advice and favorite verse. “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJB)

My method of Bible study. I hope it inspires you.

    1. Begin with a simple prayer. Ask God to help you understand what you are about to read.

    2. Choose a book of the Bible and plan to complete it. I suggest Philippians to sample this study method. *

    3. Read a chapter and write what it says in your own words. If the chapter is broken into smaller parts, do this for each part.

    4. Then, answer these questions for each part.

    • What does the passage say about God? About Man? About their relationship?
    • What principles can I apply to my life?

When you engage in this thought process as you read:

    • It helps you dig deeper
    • Understand biblical principles
    • Practice them in your life

God speaks to us through His Word, but we can’t hear His prompts if we don’t quiet our minds and read with an eagerness to understand. This method stimulates us to know more and grow more.

    * Books to consider reading first: John, Romans, Psalms, Proverbs, Philippians, Colossians, Genesis.

    * Scholars have dedicated their lives to understand the culture, history, language and interpretation of the Bible. Their research helps us to understand the context of what we are reading. Take advantage of it and invest in a good Study Bible: I suggest the NIV, NLT, or ESV. (If you cannot afford one, please contact me and I’ll send one to your home.)
