Wisdom’s Warning

Two posts in one day?  I said I was going to read a Proverb a day for 31 days, so I just had to comment on Proverbs 3!

I didn’t see it coming, but it sure is obvious.

Proverbs 3:  Wisdom’s Warning

God tells us to seek it and assures us that we won’t be disappointed, and then in chapter three He cautions that desiring wisdom–for the sake of being wise can be very dangerous.

“Don’t consider yourself to be wise; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.”  Proverbs 3:7

So how is it that we can desire wisdom and seek it without becoming prideful?

It all comes down to humility.

Recognizing the source of wisdom will squelch any pride that might rise up–and the verses just prior to verse 7 explain how to avoid it.  Verses 5 an 6 are verses that are commonly memorized, but I suggest you go back to the beginning.  Read the whole chapter for yourself.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… think about Him… He will guide you… Honor the Lord with your possessions… do not loathe His discipline… ”

and then, in focusing on The One who gives wisdom, believe His words of encouragement:

“… your foot will not stumble… you will not be afraid… your sleep will be pleasant… for the Lord will be your confidence…”

There it is.  The Lord will be your confidence.

Wisdom says,

“My confidence is not in myself, my abilities, my knowledge or wisdom;

my confidence is in The Lord.”
