Bible study @ Telegram prayer group 12.30 GMT . Title: What is covetousness?
- Jesus warned against covetousness, saying we should prefer spiritual richness to material richness
- Another word for covetousness is greed.
- Covetousness is a compulsive desire to acquire materials or wealth by all means fair or foul.
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition- 1 Timothy 6 vs 9
- The watchword to avoid covetousness is need
- The spirit of greed may be marital, materialistic, or financial
- Polygamy for instance is fuelled by the spirit of covetousness. If one wife is not enough for you, 1000 will not be enough
- Holy Spirit help me to have self-control in Jesus name
- Marital covetousness involves lusting after your neighbour’s wife
- Covetousness can lead to murder
- David was guilty of covetousness in the Bible as he took over his soldiers wife, and murdered her husband
- Covetousness gives birth to idolatry. King Solomon accumulated 700 wives and 300 concubines who led him astray from God
- Accumulating anything you don’t need is greed. Either houses, cars, clothes, shoes etc
- I know of a close relative, a woman who complained she does not have shoes, one day I visited her house and asked her to bring out all her shoes. I counted 13 pairs, yet she complained that the colours of shoes don’t match her clothes
- Many of us have clothes and shoes that we have not worn for years, yet we are not willing to give it out to the less privilege
- When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in garden of Eden they were influenced by spirit of greed
- To overcome covetousness, you have to realise there is no end chasing money, you can never have enough money, you can not beat technology or fashion, there is always a new invention, and you need to be contended with what you have.
- Holy Spirit tell me when enough is enough in Jesus name
