Hope Has A Name
Good Morning! Welcome to Day Thirty-Four! Hope is not a wish. It is not just a longing of the soul. Hope has a name that never fails.
Bible Reading: Matthew 12-14
Verse of the day is: Matthew 12:21 “And his name will be the hope of all the world.”
Word of the day is: Hope. It is the Greek word: ἐλπίζω (el-pid’-zo).
This word means: To trust; in a religious sense, to wait for salvation with joy and full confidence.
Hope Is Jesus
Our verse and word of the day come from a quotation of Isaiah 42 that Matthew records Jesus as saying.
18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory. 21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”
Hope is not our salvation. Jesus is. His name is the name above all names and reveals His character and saving power.
Place Everything In Christ
From the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, Expectations and hopes are man’s own projections of his future. But we are easily deceived and it is dangerous. Only God does not err in his expectations.
God’s name is not just a label. It is Who He is. His hope is not just a wish, but a certainty.
We are encouraged to hope and that is a good thing, but we are often placing it in the wrong thing.
I wrote my devotion, “31 Days to Hope Reinvented” from a place of desperately needing to find hope again. It was at the height of my suffering that I realized I had my focus in the wrong place.
Christ did not promise a perfect life, He promised us, though, that His hope supersedes this life. This can be hard when we just want to see some of our dreams realized and we can fail to trust in God as we hold on tightly to our desires.

- Lay down hopes that are temporary and trust God.
- His hope is superior to any hope on this earth.
