Jesus spoke differently to the crowds who came to hear him publicly than to his disciples in private. With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. Jesus is kind to us, and he leads us like a good earthly father leads his little children. He takes us by the hand and leads us patiently and gently. When Jesus taught people, he only ever told them what they could understand. He knew that his disciples could understand more than the rest, so he explained the parables to them clearly, and spoke as plainly as he could.

Remember how Mark told us that Jesus loved to touch people? Well, they loved to touch him as well. People followed Jesus from everywhere. And they weren’t just Jews. Mark tells us that the crowd was also full of people from nearby Greek-speaking and pagan regions. Jesus attracted people from every background. Those who needed healing were all crowding around him, trying to touch him. Even by touching him, they were healed. Physical touch is very important in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus doesn’t have to touch people to heal them, but he does, all the time. He touches those considered unclean or in a lower class to communicate his compassion, love, and grace.

The religious leaders confront Jesus about how he observed the Sabbath day. In response, Jesus shockingly claimed that he was the Lord of the Sabbath. Now, their disagreement about the purpose of the Sabbath is about to escalate further. This was a set-up. They were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus and condemn him, because in their eyes, it was wrong to heal someone on the Sabbath. These religious leaders lacked compassion and mercy for the poor man with the shrivelled hand. They were only using him. They were happy for the man to continue suffering for the sake of proving a religious point. Jesus is heroic in his response. He tells the man to stand up in front, where everyone can see him. Then he directly challenges the people there to confront their horrific hypocrisy. When Jesus asked this question, everyone remained silent. There was no mercy in their hearts. While everyone was silent, Jesus looked all the way around to everyone in the synagogue with anger on his face.
