Jesus Calms The Storm Surging In The Christian’s Life

What’s happening in your life right now? The storms of life can show up at any time. Sometimes we can predict them while other times they just happen. Either way, Jesus calms any storm that surge in our lives.

Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”   Mark 4:38

If you read this entire event in Mark 4, faith stands out as the obvious topic. Specifically, we can focus on overcoming fear by putting our faith in the Lord. And rightly so, look at what verse 40 says.

Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Mark 4:40

Understand this, faith always serves as the foundation of our Christian walk. With that in mind, let’s dig a little deeper as we open new insight into our walk in faith.

5 of the 12 apostles were fishermen. It’s not like they had never seen a storm on the sea before. Yet they exhibited great concern for their safety. We might even say, they were worried.

But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. . . The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Mark 4:37,38

They woke Jesus from His sleep and He immediately calms the storm. First the wind, then the waves.

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Mark 4:39

Picture this Storm

As I thought about this entire event, I tried to picture what had happened in my mind. Have you ever wondered how Jesus could have slept during such a fierce storm?

The boat must have been swaying and rocking and dipping and of course, getting soaked  Maybe exhaustion overtook Him, and physically He was wiped out. Ok, I get that.

So, the storm didn’t wake him. But when the disciples came to wake him, he awoke. Why would their shouting and shaking be any more violent than the storm they found themselves in?

Jesus calms the storm

Jesus Calms each Storm in our Lives

It wasn’t! But we see a wonderful spiritual truth that stuck out to me in this portion of scripture.

God doesn’t get shaken up about the circumstances happening in our lives. He does, however, care about us.

In Matthew 28, Jesus commissioned His disciples. We call it the Great Commission. His instructions were the following.

  • Go and make disciples of all the nations,
  • Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • Teach them to obey all the commands He has given us.  Matthew 28:19-20

But the last words that Matthew recorded were just as important. And they go right along with our subject for today.

And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20

Our circumstances don’t excite him at all. But He is always there for us when we call upon his name. Even if it’s to give us a lesson on faith.

Lord, thank you that you are not swayed by my circumstances, but you are always there when I call on your name in the midst of them.
