Committed & Devoted To Jesus - Pursuing Intimacy With God
Committed & Devoted To Jesus
What does a Christian that is fully committed & devoted to Jesus look like ? It could be someone who is in full time ministry, like a pastor or a missionary. But not all pastors and people in full time ministry have hearts that are “after God’s own heart”. And not nearly all are fully committed & devoted to Jesus.
It could be someone who is a lay person. Someone that has a career. Or it could be a stay at home Mom. Vocation or career or position at a church or other outwardly things do not necessarily determine if someone is fully committed & devoted to Jesus.
Committed & Devoted To Jesus
What Is In Your Heart Matters Most
It is what is in your heart that is important. God is looking for people that love Him with all of their heart and soul and mind and strength. Someone who has a heart and a love and passion for God. Someone who is willing to trust and seek and follow Jesus with all of their heart, no matter the cost.
Matthew 22:37-38 – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”
The Bible Has Many Examples Of People Committed & Devoted To Jesus
God’s word gives us good examples to follow, in the Old Testament and New Testament. The book of Acts is a great guide of what God’s people and church ought to look like.
Acts 2:42, speaking of the early church, says “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
The Greek word for devoted in this verse is “proskartereo”. It is the strongest word in the Greek language for commitment. It literally means to “latch on and refuse to let go“.
God Does Not Want Good Religious People
Christians in the early church were not committed and devoted to being religious, or to doing religious things. They didn’t do Bible study or prayer or fellowship as a traditional religious thing that good Christians should do. They “latched on and refused to let go” … of Jesus. They were personally fully committed & devoted to Jesus. And to following & obeying Him, no matter the cost.
May we have the faith and courage to be totally committed & devoted to Jesus. And to do the things that He commands us to do. Especially to share the Gospel with others, and make disciples. No matter what it costs.
Matthew 4:19 – “And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew 28:19-20 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
In Part 2 of Committed & Devoted To Jesus we will talk about the early church in Acts, and how the people and the apostles were fully committed & devoted to Jesus.
