4 Consequences when Life is Overtaken by Sin - Christian Perspectives

David wrote this prophetic Psalm of when Jesus felt forsaken by God hundreds of years before Jesus ever walked on the earth. Within the verses of this Psalm, he talked about the day when Jesus went to the cross of Calvary for you and me. David laid out for us the pain and agony of that day. He described the consequences when His life was overtaken by the sin that Jesus experienced.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.  Psalm 22:1-2 (NIV)

He reported the inconsiderate soldiers bidding for the clothes of Jesus while He was suffering great humiliation as His nakedness was displayed for all the world to see. His enemies stared and gloated at this bony body as it was being suspended on a cross by three nails.

Verse 1 starts with a direct quote Jesus uttered soon before he gave up His life. Mark 15:34 says, And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). Jesus cried out to His Father, and His Father turned a deaf ear to Him.  Why? Because Jesus took the sins of the world upon Himself and The Father had to turn away from the sin.

From the time Jesus was arrested until He breathed His last breath, He didn’t say very much. I wonder if the things David wrote in this Psalm were the silent feelings Jesus had going on within Him? Keep in mind, sin was a new experience for our Lord.

Consequences We Experience when We Let Sin Overtake Us

Consequences We Experience when We Let Sin Overtake Us

After you and I have a relationship with the Lord and if we fall back into sin, we have some not so nice feelings that we experience. We Experience consequences when our lives are overtaken by sin. These were the same things that were going on inside of Jesus just before He became the ultimate sacrifice for the world. This makes what the writer of Hebrews wrote even more real to us. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. Hebrews 4:15

When Life is Overtaken by Sin We Feel Abandoned by God

The first thing that goes through our minds is, God has abandoned us. We feel forsaken by God.  During that time of sinfulness, we too, might also want to utter the same words that are in verse 1, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

The Lord told Joshua in the Old Testament and us in the New Testament, For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5. You may feel far from God but he assures us that He isn’t far from you. We can celebrate our life in Christ.

We Feel like a Worm

The second thing we read about is this Psalm is, when Jesus was hanging on the cross there was a challenge made to let the Lord save him!  If the Lord loves him so much, let the Lord rescue him!” David said in verse 6 that Jesus felt like a worm and not a man. He said I am scorned and despised by all!

When life is overtaken by sin it will always make us feel like we are less of a human being. And that others know what we have done. We are told in Matthew 6:26, Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

The enemy of our soul will use the term, “if God.” “If God loved you then you wouldn’t be experiencing the consequences of your sin.” I want you to know that no “If’s” exist when it comes to your importance to the Lord. “God does” love you and He cares for you and will always forgive you.

When Life is Overtaken by Sin We Feel Far from God

Sin makes us feel far from God, the Psalmist said in verse 11 that trouble is near, and no one else can help me. I’m sure Jesus had feelings of helplessness, but He also knew for Him that He was at the point of no return.

When we allow sin to overtake us, we want to isolate ourselves because we feel there is no help for us at all. In this life, we will never be to the point of no return. Jesus tells the story of the father of the prodigal son in Luke 15:20. While he (the son) was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. We will always be able to come back to our heavenly Father.

We Feel Weak

Verse 15 says, My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay. Sin will zap the spiritual strength right out of us. It will also affect our physical strength as well. David doesn’t stop there, in verse 19 he said, O Lord, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid!

In Nehemiah it says, Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!” I know it’s hard to muster up joy when dejected. But you don’t have to do it on your own. Verse 26 in our Psalm says All who seek the Lord will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. John wrote in his first epistle How To Experience Complete Joy In The Lord.

Jesus did experience our weaknesses and David gave us an inside look of our Lord’s thoughts and feelings in this chapter. We will reap what we sow in our lives but the consequences of our sin have nothing to do with how much God loves us. The things you are experiencing, He understands and He is there for you.

Lord, we don’t often think of your feelings especially when you were hanging on the cross to take our sin away. Thank you for being there for us when we have those weak moments which allow sin to overtake us.
