Memorise: “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature” (Col 1:15)

Read: Colossians 1:15-18

jesus-imageWhile instructing John the Beloved to write to the seven churches in Asia, the Lord Jesus introduced Himself to him as the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last (Revelation 1:11). Jesus is Alpha – that is the First.

He is first in everything. In Revelation 1:5, He is called the First begotten of the dead. He is the first to rise from the dead and continues to live forever. Nobody else has achieved this feat after Him.

No wonder in Hebrews 1:6, when He was sent into the world, He came as the first begotten and all angels were compelled to worship Him. He was also the first born of Mary (Matthew 1:25). Romans 8:29 says, “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first born among many brethren”. He is the firstborn of the church, hence He is the head of His body- the Body of Christ.

‘Who is the image of the invisible God, the first born of every creature” (Col 1:15). In verse 17, it says He comes first before all things. Among all of God’s creatures, Jesus is first. And that is why He has pre-eminence. How does the title, The first, benefit us today? He is Alpha – the first so that He can have the pre-eminence. He is first so that He can be on top and above all. Without Him, nothing works.

He is First so that you can be the head, like Him. He is the Head. If you are connected to The Head, you cannot be tail. In Deuteronomy 28:13, He promises that if only you can completely listen to and obey the First – The Head, He will make sure you are not only the head but permanently the head. Headship is an opening – a vacancy created and reserved in the Head – Jesus Christ.

Once He makes you to occupy that space, you will see yourself reflecting His Headship in every area of your life. That was where He put Adam before the fall. But the moment he decided to do it his own way, Adam lost his seat in Christ and he became tail. God has reserved a place for you in Christ. It is a position of permanent headship.

You can be head and first in your academics, in all competitions you participate in You can be head in ministry. You can be head in wealth, progress, and fruitfulness. Many believers are yet to occupy that reserved space. Ask God to help you to occupy your rightful space in Christ from today.

Lord Jesus, because you are the First, make me first in every good thing.
