THE ADOLESCENTS AND THE HOME

TEST PSALM 119:9; PROV. 3:1; PROV. 2:1-8; PROV. 22:4-6; PROV. 21:24 PROV23:19-21

OBJECTIVE: at the end of the lesson, the adolescents should be able to abstain from evil acts, worldliness, obey the word of God honour their parents and live Christ like lives and also their parents will be able to live peaceful with them.

INTRODUCTION: the word “Adolescence” is taken from a Greek word known as Adolescere which means “ to grow up to maturity”. It is a metaphoric period during which an adult is created out of a child. The individual is no more a child, but he is not yet an adult. This period is called “adolescence.

                This is a period when adolescent assets his/her independence. The imperative for independence is imposed upon the individual adolescent as a result of the biological or physical growth and maturation. Because of this maturation, it drives them to assert independence; these leads to conflict with parents.

 It must be noted that young people feel a constant tension between their needs to break away from their parents and their dependency on parents. To the adolescent, there are some areas independence is need, some of these are making of friends, education, work, career etc.

                It must not be forgotten that peer group plays important roles in the psychological social development of most adolescent, there are some areas independence is need, some of these are making of friends, education, work, career etc.

                The members of the peer group cherish certain values like “tastes and styles of dressing (fashion), music, decision to have boy/girl friend, alcoholism, smoking and usage of drugs among the boys. But all these are contrary to the words of God. it is written “Love not the world…… 1 John 2:15; 1 John 3:7-9; Prov. 14:12 and Prov. 1:10-12. “ My son if sinners entice thee, consent thou not ………………..”

                Let us consider some adolescents in the Bible who feared  God and departed from evil

i.                     Joseph Gen 39:8

ii.                   Timothy

iii.                  John the Baptist

iv.                 Esther etc.

Also there are some of the young people who followed the worldly way: Amnon 2 Samuel 13:1-4;

Dinah Gen 34:1-2

THE FAMILY: The parents are intents on being buddies with their children and take the responsibility of parenting seriously enough. Parent today must take the time to invest in quality and quantity time to create a loving, firm and caring environment for young people. Teach them the word of God. Deut6:1-8. Young people use drugs for many reasons; hopelessness, rebellion and the desires to feel like an adult.

        Finally young people, God loves you unconditionally, not for what you do but for who you are.

Rom 5:8. God created you in His image. Eph 2:10 “ for we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good work. Which God prepared in advance; for us to do you can say “

No to drugs, bad friends wrong advice, sexually promiscuity and other temptation s when you understand that you are made in God’s unique image. You are gifted and different from every other  person because God created each one of us from a different mould.

3.       Father Lord, give unto me wisdom to lead my children in Godly way in the name of Jesus
