Calling on the Name of the Lord (2)

Calling on the name of the Lord was a significant practice in the early Christian years.

Isaiah 12 hints that it will still be practiced in New Jerusalem. Verses 2 to 4: “Jah Jehovah is my strength and song, / And He has become my salvation. / Therefore you will draw water with rejoicing / From the springs of salvation, / And you will say in that day, / Give thanks to Jehovah; call upon His name!”New Jerusalem

In this portion are both drawing water with rejoicing and calling upon the name of the Lord. In New Jerusalem we will draw water from the river of water of life which flows out from the throne of God and the Lamb. Surely we will do this with rejoicing and with giving of thanks and therefore also with calling.

In Isaiah 55:6 is the encouragement “Seek Jehovah while He may be found; / Call upon Him while He is near.” Calling must have been prominent among the prophets because Naaman, captain of the army of Syria, knew that they called on the Lord (2 Kings 5:11).

In the Old Testament times, calling was practiced by Abraham (Gen. 12:8), Isaac (Gen. 26:25), Moses and Aaron (Psa. 99:6), Samson (Judg. 15:18), Samuel (1 Sam. 12:18), David (2 Sam. 22:4, 7), and many others. Now we continue their practice.

Do You Feel Accepted or Rejected?

I went to bed, pulled the covers over my head, and had a big ole pity party. Once again, I had been rejected…come in second place…told I wasn’t quite what “they” were looking for. The scarlet letter loomed large. It wasn’t an A like Hester Prynne’s in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book I had read in high school, but a big fat R that I chose to wear when life turned ugly. Read more...
