Remember The Faithfulness Of God

The Israelites experienced the faithfulness of God firsthand. The sounds of celebration filled their camp. They watched the Red Sea close behind them as waves swallowed up their enemy.

Songs rose heavenward, tambourines rang, and hearts leaped with joy. But soon, the desert heat dried their gratitude. Complaints replaced their praise, and doubt overtook their trust. They forgot.

Then his people believed his promises. Then they sang his praise. Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done! Psalm 106:12-13

Psalm 106 tells that story—a story of the faithfulness of God and the forgetfulness of His people. It exposes the frailty of human memory and magnifies the constancy of God’s mercy.

In the verses of this Psalm, we will discover why remembrance matters and how grace triumphs over rebellion. Before recounting Israel’s failure, the Psalmist lifted his voice in gratitude.

Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord? Who can ever praise him enough? Psalm 106:1-2

God’s goodness stands unshaken. His mercy endures for centuries and extends into eternity. The Psalmist urges us to thank God for His goodness and steadfast love, which never falter.

Gratitude must saturate the heart of every believer. Even when humanity stumbles, the faithfulness of God remains steadfast.

There is joy for those who deal justly with others and always do what is right. Psalm 106:3

Joy doesn’t flow from self-effort but from aligning our lives with God’s righteousness. When we pursue justice, guided by the Spirit, we experience the deep gladness that obedience brings.

Do you pause to thank God for His enduring mercy? Our gratitude towards God trains the soul to notice His hand at work and shields us from forgetfulness.

Confession and Humility: The Acknowledgement Of Sin

Like our ancestors, we have sinned. We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly! Psalm 106:6

The Psalmist moved from praise to confession. No excuses, no comparisons, just the truth: We have sinned. This honest admission set the tone for the historical review that follows.

Confession unlocks mercy. The Psalm does not gloss over failure; it names rebellion for what it is. The Israelites ignored God’s wonders, grumbled in the wilderness, and worshiped idols.

Yet the Psalmist includes himself—”we have sinned.” True repentance acknowledges that sin permeates every generation and every heart. When we confess our sin, we align with reality.

God cannot heal what we refuse to reveal. Unconfessed sin clogs our spiritual life. Honesty with ourselves and with God takes humility, and it clears the way for restoration.

    The Faithfulness Of God

    The Danger of Forgetfulness

A repeated theme in Psalm 106 is forgetfulness. Three times, the Psalmist named their failure to remember. A closer look shows that the forgetfulness of the Israelites fueled their downfall.

    • Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the Lord’s miraculous deeds. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea. Psalm 106:7
    • Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done! They wouldn’t wait for his counsel! Psalm 106:13
    • They forgot God, their savior, who had done such great things in Egypt. Psalm 106:21

When memory fades, gratitude dies, and pride rises. They forgot the deliverance of God and His faithfulness at the Red Sea. They forgot His provision in the desert and His promises.

Also, they had forgotten the covenant that bound them to His love and obedience. Their forgetfulness led to idolatry, impatience, and compromise. Memory loss turned worshipers into idolaters.

We battle the same danger today. Distractions, busyness, and self-reliance can crowd out remembrance. When we fail to recall God’s goodness, we drift toward sin.

So, build habits of remembrance by journaling answered prayers. Share testimonies with friends and revisit Scripture promises. Do anything to anchor your heart in His gratitude.

    God’s Righteous Anger and Mercy

Israel’s persistent disobedience stirred God’s anger. Have you ever run across people like that? Their persistent persistence makes me thankful that God has to deal with them, not me.

That is why the Lord’s anger burned against his people, and he abhorred his own special possession. He handed them over to pagan nations, and they were ruled by those who hated them. Psalm 106:40-41

Sin carries consequences. God disciplines because of His love, but His holiness cannot ignore rebellion. Even though His justice never bends, His mercy never ends.

Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries. He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love. Psalm 106:44-45

This tension between judgment and grace reveals God’s heart. He remains just yet merciful. He responds to cries for help. And He remembers His promises even when His people forget theirs.

When we remember the faithfulness of God, we will see His discipline as restoration and not punishment. God corrects us to draw us back to Him, not to push us away.

The Final Plea to the Faithfulness of God

Save us, O Lord our God! Gather us back from among the nations, so we can thank your holy name and rejoice and praise you. Psalm 106:47

That cry echoes into the Gospel when Jesus answered it with His blood. He gathers us from sin’s captivity to eternal salvation. The Psalmist closed this Psalm the same way he opened it.

Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the Lord! Psalm 106:48

Salvation produces worship. When we remember grace, praise overflows, and gratitude cannot remain silent. The redeemed heart longs to exalt the faithfulness of God for His unending mercy.

Remember the Faithfulness of God and not Our Forgetfulness by:

    • Practice Daily Gratitude – Begin each day with thanksgiving for God’s steadfast love. Praise displaces forgetfulness.
    • Confess Honestly – Do not hide sin. Name it, repent, and experience cleansing through Christ.
    • Remember God’s Works – Create spiritual markers in your life. Celebrate the faithfulness of God often.
    • Respond to Discipline with Humility – Trust God’s correction as an act of love designed to restore you.
    • Live a Life of Praise – Let salvation fuel worship. Make every moment an offering of gratitude.

Lord, thank you for your enduring love and mercy. Forgive us when we forget your goodness and follow our own ways. Teach us to remember your mighty works and to trust you fully.
