Cataracts Improved my Vision
It’s a Paradox!
I know what you’re thinking. “How bad did Maureen’s vision have to be for cataracts to improve it?” Eye doctors call this strange phenomena “second sight.” Now I’m extremely nearsighted. As my cataracts started to develop, two changes occurred within my eyes. Each lens started to become denser and less flexible. Increasingly rigid, my lenses can’t change shape as easily. So over time it will become harder for my eyes to focus. But for me, there’s a bonus. Because my vision has improved. I’m less nearsighted now than I was a few years back.
Sadly, this blessing is only temporary.
Because my cataracts will continue to worsen, making the whole world blurry.
How do Cataracts Form?
As people age, the proteins in the lens begin to break down and start to clump together, creating an opaque area in the eye. As the cloudiness increases, it can become more difficult to read. The blinding glare of headlights make night driving hazardous. One friend described it as “seeing through fog.” Most elderly people develop cataracts. Growing older is the main cause. But smoking, diabetes, certain medications and lots of exposure to sunlight are all risk factors.
Only one cataract may form if a single eye is traumatized or injured.
Treatment
Cataract surgery is the best way to restore clear vision. Two of my best friends went through this procedure. The surgeon removes the natural clouded lens. Then he inserts a clear artificial lens made of silicon or acrylic. This new interior lens corrects for nearsightedness or farsightedness and/or astigmatism. Instead of wearing eyeglasses or contacts, the corrective lens has now been placed inside the eye. The new lens refocuses light on the retina restoring clear vision again. Most of the lenses today are also coated to block harmful UV light.
Typically the surgeon only operates on one eye at a time. They let the first eye heal and at some later date, repeat the surgery on the second eye.
My Spiritual Point
There is so much deception in the world today. The Father of Lies is enjoying himself. So how do we keep our spiritual eyesight clear?
Spiritual cataracts develop slowly too. Our enemy wants to cloud our vision and blind us to what’s truly important. We do have some effective Godly cures. But we need to use them.
The key ingredient is humility.
Being a biologist, I get irritated by bad science, containing lies which are obviously not true. I can clearly see when other Christians are basing their beliefs on false information. But I am humble enough to know this; I can be fooled by the enemy too. Recognizing the lies the devil has hand-crafted for me? Almost impossible. I’m totally blind to it.
So I regularly pray and ask God to reveal the lies I’m believing.
I cry out to Him to do so.
We have two weapons the world doesn’t have. Our Bible is the Word of Truth and dwelling in us is the Spirit of Truth.
In this time of darkness, when everything is growing foggy, I believe the Holy Spirit will shed light on anyone who is hungry for the truth.
Just be ready to have your opinions adjusted.
