Christ is the Tree of Life to Us
Colossians proclaims “in Him [Christ] dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (2:9) and “Christ our life” (3:4). John 1:4 declares “in Him was life.” Through His death and resurrection this life has become “our life.”
Revelation 22:2 says, “On this side and on that side of the river was the tree of life, producing twelve fruits, yielding its fruit each month…”
The tree of life signifies Christ, the embodiment of the Triune God (Col. 2:9), as the divine life for our food. Because God and life are abstract, the abstract God needs an embodiment, and this embodiment is Christ. Christ is the embodiment of God as life. As such an embodiment, Christ is the tree of life for God to dispense Himself into us.*
Christ is our life and He is also our life supply, as He presented Himself in John 6 as the bread of life. Daily we eat of Him to “live because of Him” (John 6:57). Because the tree of life in New Jerusalem bears fruit every month, it shows that we will be eating Him as our life supply eternally in New Jerusalem.
By eating Him we will live because of Him uninterruptedly and eternally. To live Him is to express Him, to magnify Him. Paul, in Philippians 1:20-21 declared that he was doing this even while in a Roman prison. We will all do much more in New Jerusalem and thereby fulfill God’s desire for His eternal expression.
