Shining from Matthew to Revelation (3)
Jesus Christ is the Light. When we receive Him as our life, He becomes light in us and we are then “children of light.” His life in us builds us together with others to become a local church as a shining golden lampstand. Ultimately all the lampstands become the one eternal golden lampstand, New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:10-11 describes New Jerusalem as “having the glory of God.” This glory is the shining, the radiant expression, of God. This is the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose—to be fully expressed in a corporate humanity.
“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Revelation 21:23 says New Jerusalem “has no need of the sun or of the moon that they should shine in it, for the glory of God illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.” The light of the city is the glory of God in the Lamb, Jesus Christ.
To allow the brilliance to shine forth universally, New Jerusalem is “clear as crystal” (Rev. 21:11), “like clear glass” (21:18), and “like transparent glass” (21:21). The Spirit is operating in all the believers today to clear away all our darkness, to bring us to “walk in the light” (1 John 1:7). This is an aspect of our preparation for New Jerusalem.
