Come Forward to the Throne of Grace

New JerusalemHebrews exhorts us to “come forward” to God through the new way opened by the Lord Jesus in His death and resurrection. Two verses about this are:
4:16, “Let us therefore come forward with boldness to the throne of grace”
10:22, “Let us come forward to the Holy of Holies with a true heart in full assurance of faith”

The boldness and the full assurance in these verses are not our self-confidence. They are based solely on what the Lord has accomplished and on what He is for us and to us today. The throne in Hebrews 4 is in the heavenly holy of holies in Hebrews 10.

Undoubtedly, the throne mentioned here is the throne of God, which is in heaven (Rev. 4:2)…This throne is the throne of both God and the Lamb (Rev. 22:1). How can we come to the throne of God and the Lamb, Christ, in heaven while we still live on earth? The secret is our spirit, referred to in v. 12. The very Christ who is sitting on the throne in heaven (Rom. 8:34) is also now in us (Rom. 8:10), that is, in our spirit (2 Tim. 4:22).*

Hebrews 4:12 says, “the word of God is living and operative and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit…” This is our human spirit, which is distinct from our soul. We exercise our spirit to “come forward” to God now and to allow the Spirit mingled with our spirit to prepare us for New Jerusalem.

    The Mall or the Manger?

Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
